J'ai travaillé chez Cactus Club Cafe à temps partiel

    Avantages

Sure, you'll develop your interpersonal and communication skills. It's cool to surround yourself in a professional business/casual environment. The company does well to make you feel self important with the status of working at Cactus, and others tend to recognize it too. It can be a fun environment, and looks good on your resume. Recommend it as a part time job while you're in high school and looking to be a server.

    Inconvénients

    Now for the extreme negatives..

Honestly its lame being a hostess. You open doors for people, which I understand the importance of in customer hospitality. But I've had people regard me as a pretty door stop, and it gets old when both customer and employer objectify and consider you nothing more than fodder. At the location I worked, there's a hierarchy with the hostess team. Management doesn't care for you unless your loved by the Senior Hostess, which can suck when they only care about their own promotion and not the team. My experience with our "leaders" was some malicious mix of knocking new employees down and trying to make them quit so that they won't outperform.
The process of becoming a server from a host is a long one, and not many get the opportunity despite their potential.
Working at Cactus, you need thick skin. Not because of the customers, but because of the employees. There is a lot of passive aggression, and most the time the favourite subject is who the team hates the most. Its a lot of hostility and the vibe may not be right for you. Hopefully that's not the case.

    Conseils à la direction

Consider who you hire as senior hostess and if they really have leadership qualifications. I had five nice girls around me quit because of the passive bullying done, and the management didn't care. The hostility drains any passion to work and do your best.

J'ai travaillé chez Cactus Club Cafe en Contrat Permanent (Plus d'un an)

    Avantages

You're basically part of a big team hosting a party when you work in the evening. It almost doesn't feel like work sometimes.

    Inconvénients

If you're not in the mood to be social on an off night, you have to put up a front and the music volume doesn't help.

    Conseils à la direction

    Keep it up

Je travaille chez Cactus Club Cafe à temps partiel (Plus d'un an)

    Avantages

Staff discount on food, flexible hours, great coworkers, good money (tips), fun work environment

    Inconvénients

Having changed their auto-gratuity rule to 12 or more and only for reservations has been a way to solve problems that really hangs servers out to dry. Now, if a large party walks in and chooses not to tip, the server still has to tip out on them and is not protected by the restaurant. Practices like this are why cactus no longer wins "best place to work". There's also quite a divide between FOH and BOH staff

    Conseils à la direction

Fix your auto gratuity rule so that the server isn't the only one in the line of fire. Don't make servers tip out on the kitchen's mistakes. Be more considerate in the treatment of your staff in general.

J'ai travaillé chez Cactus Club Cafe à temps partiel (Moins d'un an)

    Avantages

The staff are generally really nice. I've heard other locations can be quite catty, but the staff at my location were amazing. There was a lot of flexibility in scheduling, it was fairly easy to book time off, and swap with other girls for more or less shifts.

There is opportunity to move up within the company. Especially if you fit in with the Cactus culture, and manage to befriend the management and staff. Previous restaurant experience helps, but fitting in seemed the biggest predictor of moving up.

Males are lucky enough to be promoted immediately to expo.

    Inconvénients

They promise a lot during the hiring process, and throughout any subsequent attempts to ask about moving up. Lots of persistence helps, but it tends to feel like a lot of empty promises.
Management tends to micromanage the staff, particularly the hostesses.
15 minute breaks when you work from 6pm - 1am really really suck.
The pay isn't worth the amount of work you do, not until you become a server. (Like cleaning up puke, the washrooms, outside the restaurant in the rain)

    Conseils à la direction

Just be straight up, if you don't think a staff member is the right fit to move up at the moment, don't promise it. It seems like you're just leading staff on so they'll stay with the company.
If there's things staff need to work on to move up, give then the opportunity to do so. Telling them they need to be more vocal, then putting them in a position where being vocal is nearly impossible is just setting them up for failure.
    The favouritism, is obvious.
If you're going to micromanage staff, why bother hiring them in the first place? Many of the staff are much more capable than you give them credit for.

Je travaille chez Cactus Club Cafe à plein temps (Moins d'un an)

    Avantages

Fun co-workers but nasty up the 'hierarchy'

    Inconvénients

Terrible terrible terrible hours. Offer you full time and then only get 1-3 shifts a week. On top of that hostess plus other jobs don't get a cut of the tips which are bragged about how much servers make frequently.

    Conseils à la direction

Hire less, provide more hours. Dont lie about people getting full time or being moved up and dont follow through.

    Avantages

    -Great food
    - Great work friendships

    Inconvénients

    - Management does not care about certain departments
    - They do not care about your well being
    - Voicing your opinion is clearly a no go
    - There is no moving up with the company. The company preaches
they are all about moving the right people up. They continue to make promises and do not keep their word. Unless you are willing to bend over backwards for this company, do not work here.
    -Tip out a lot

    Conseils à la direction

    Care about your staff.
