    Avantages

Great benefits. Lots of travel opportunity. Great for some (not for everyone)— especially for people avoiding their families or trying to have an affair.

If you don't like your current team, you can often move to another one or relocate to another location.

Great opportunity to learn new skills.
Some of the leadership is inspiring.
    Nice workspaces for some.

    Inconvénients

Gender-biased, misguided, disorganized, competitive structure, reorgs frequent

This place is trying to be a start-up with huge enterprise problems—it's awkward. Makes for a lot of wasted effort for people trying to get things done in an innovative way with business-side making the last judgment. Shiny object syndrome. Emphasis on PR moments over fixing real problems.

Performance reviews lend to a gender- or personality-bias when it comes to promotions. Women and/or introverts often get the short end of the stick unless they have a great/shark managers. I've seen the most ineffective game-players get promoted over competent and effective peers who seemed to get punished for actually getting things done and not wasting their energy dick-swinging or taking unnecessary travel. In effect, a lot of the people promoted do not make for the best leadership. Bad management.

Too many cooks in the kitchen with product or design, not enough project managers (or none at all).

Constant reorganization is exhausting and disorienting. Nobody knows what's going on. Deflates spirit and doesn't help progress.

    Conseils à la direction

Pay attention. Don't just spend money on diversity & inclusion training — really implement some change in the culture.

Get organized. Lessen reorgs. Stop acquiring other companies before you can handle what you have.

You are not a tech company or a start up, just face it. Just be a better company, spend the money on hiring better engineers instead of on business people from failed start-ups who don't know how to work effectively in enterprise environments.

    Avantages

Benefits are amazing. Culture and values are outstanding. Facilities are beautiful and make work a place you want to go.

    Inconvénients

Re-org’s happen a lot. One minute you have a smart, nurturing supervisor that helps you build your career while praising you for your amazing work. And the next minute you have a back stabbing, ladder climbing, bully of a boss that manages by fear and intimidation and you’re wondering if you went to sleep and woke up in the midst of a bad dream because you’re certain that two days ago you were given an excellent review by a Sr Executive and today you’re being told that your work is horrible, you shouldn’t talk in front of superiors anymore, you require special treatment and you should think about your future here, all by a new boss that’s clearly intimidated by smart people and ready to re-org you out of the company because they can to save their own job.

    Conseils à la direction

Train people managers. Don’t assume they know what they’re doing or that they’re all good st it. Make sure all AR investigations are done with complete anonymity or else no one can ever feel good about reporting a manager that’s a bully.

    Inconvénients

There are many positions that could be completed remotely however they prefer to have teams collocated.

    Avantages

Very good benefits, flexible work hours, good advancement opportunities. Very nice location on West Wacker Drive. Multi-state locations, CEO committed to cutting edge technology. Very committed to diversity.

    Inconvénients

Not sure how secure the Chicago area is in future plans. May have to relocate to keep advancing. Banking is a dynamic arena at the moment and COF is in the horse race, positioning itself.

    Avantages

    Open to latest ideas
    Good employee support
    Work life balance is good

    Inconvénients

Forced standards tools before they become production ready and have enough support. (jumping too fast into new tools)
I personally admire the courage to do that but some times it puts too much pressure on developers.

Je travaille chez Capital One à plein temps (Moins d'un an)

    Avantages

    - work/life balance
    - great benefits
    - collaborative
    - continuous learning encouraged including role rotation
    - empowered to pursue new ideas at any level
    - trying to change the way things are done in banking

    Inconvénients

Gender-bias and a lack of diversity are pervasive issues (unless you are a white male), while this problem isn't specific to Capital One and a problem that plagues most of banking, don't expect to see diversity in roles higher than the Manager level.

There is no understanding of how to grow and develop Product Management talent. You're expected to make it up as you go, sounds great with lots of room to grow, until management decides what you've done isn't what they wanted and you'll find yourself seeking other opportunities. Depending who your manager and leadership chain are will determine if you were given any constructive feedback or an opportunity to take a different approach/adjust.

    Other quick thoughts:
    - there are lots of great people at this company however your experience will vary greatly depending on your direct manager and leadership chain
    - constant reorgs are exhausting and disorienting
    - consensus driven decision making makes it difficult to get thing done timely

J'ai travaillé chez Capital One en Contrat Permanent (Pendant plus de 5 ans)

    Avantages

Brilliant, ethical leadership; emphasis on doing the right thing; work/life balance commitment is strong; forward-looking innovation; uses fact-based decision-making; fail forward philosophy - okay to make mistakes, but must own resolutions.
Great benefits; they value continuous learning; open to internal job changes after you have a history of performance of course.
Great colleagues; positive atmosphere; generally no backstabbing
    Flexibility on hours and locations (on-site workstation, flexible seating around campus, work from home if needed);

    Inconvénients

When business strategies changes there can be job realignments, redeployments, and/or separations. Know it and be aware. Not particularly often but can be suddenly rolled out. They are open with information about the strategy changes.
They still use a form of the old GE performance review process. It's part of the culture, but behind the times. Don't expect it to change easily.

    Conseils à la direction

Approval ratings of the CEO by associates is through the roof. Stay healthy and continue to love what you're doing.

If you are not evaluating performance management methods that have been adopted by Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Deloitte, Accenture, PwC, and even GE, you should make sure that is being studied.

Company has great benefits and values. Ability to work flexible hours for work/life balance. Beautiful Plano campus with lots of amenities.
