J'ai travaillé chez Center for Strategic and International Studies à temps plein plus de 4 ans

    Avantages

Largely friendly and supportive work environment. Great community for junior staff. Awesome networking opportunities.

    Inconvénients

Low pay, though that's industry- and not firm-specific. Progression for junior staff is a bit muddled and needs clarification.

    Conseils à la direction

Assign more value to your junior staff. They do a tremendous amount of the work but are paid a pittance because they are not "Senior." The amount of work that comes out that comes out belonging to a senior expert which is in reality the hard work of junior staff and interns is much too high. Assign credit where it is due! Also, offload the whiny and complicated senior staff that run against the grain of the otherwise...

    Avantages

Lots of exposure to DC and great networking opportunities; also very good chances to learn about the field in general and the issue area that my group focused on

    Inconvénients

Very director-focused, and programs tend to live or die by the director. Also, the program staff that managed the interns did not receive any support or training from HR, and this did not know how to be effective intern managers.

    Conseils à la direction

More opportunities for feedback during the internship! Would love to have seen one-on-one meetings with HR at the halfway point.

    Avantages

CSIS always has something happening and every week was something interesting. I worked on the corporate side but got to attend most of the events and just seeing all the work they put in to get their event up and running is amazing.

    Inconvénients

I noticed in the department I worked in, it was very process oriented in a bad way. There were multiple steps to every task and it felt like things took so long to be completed.

    Conseils à la direction

Clean up your processes, they’re messy and some tasks seem unnecessary. More streamlining, less back and forth.

    Avantages

Engaging work environment and colleague Good ethics at workplace Good working environment One of the few DC workplaces that pay to interns Good upper management

    Inconvénients

Little prospects to be hired as a full time for interns Must be willing to do some grunt work (may not be necessarily bad ; you may learn something- e.g. making coffee, copies, assistance for conferences, etc.)

      Avantages

Hands on internship, friendly junior staff, great place to use as a launching point to creating a network in DC

      Inconvénients

There's a limit to how much you can dig into any internship, and there's very little way to get hired at CSIS full-time after

J'ai travaillé chez Center for Strategic and International Studies à temps plein plus de 2 ans

      Avantages

-The high-quality work and output of the Center is incredible. Staff members are intelligent, down to earth and work extremely hard to put the Center at a great stature. -Benefits are decent, pay should be a little higher but isn't bad compared to similar organizations -Lots of free food

      Inconvénients

-The Center is so extremely decentralized that executive management has little to no involvement in what's going on in each program. That means that bad directors and poor management run rampant, and your entire experience depends on which program you work for and who your director is. -The executive leadership team is understaffed, overworked, and favor some programs over others, so opportunities for change and problems/issues...

      Conseils à la direction

Making CSIS less decentralized will fix some of the major institutional issues of the organization and will also help bring staff members closer together. Stop giving senior staff unnecessary raises and promotions and invest more in the junior, mid-level, and administrative staff that make the organization run as well as it does.

      Inconvénients

No real advancement opportunities, but good place for a year or two early on.
