    Avantages

Excellent people and ambition to succeed and grow at the rate that was right for the business. My Portfolio Director was one of the best managers I have ever had, and taught me and my team a lot about business strategy.

    Inconvénients

The businesses are very silo-ed so there wasn't much cross-function learning or sharing of best practice. Definitely something that could be improved.

J'ai travaillé chez Clarion Events à temps plein (Plus de 3 ans)

    Avantages

    - Some good events
    - Has won some awards
    - 2 decent company parties each year

    Inconvénients

    - Terrible/ non-existent development opportunities, you have to fight and struggle for any sort of training, guidance, mentoring, promotional opportunities

    - No recognition of talent and plans to keep them. There is a high turnover rate, possibly due to a misplaced arrogance that Clarion has. They don't appear to realise how lucky they are to still have some of those talented, loyal, dedicated people there. Have been blatantly told that there was no career progression because of the function working in ... limited ways for people to move sideways in the business.

    - HR is horrendous. There is no support offered, especially for serious matters. Know of cases referred to HR about medical diagnosed stress and nothing was done, similarly cases of sexual harassment be recognised and again, nothing changed in the working environment. I know of cases of gender discrimination be raised and the response was beyond poor.

    - There is a drugs culture among some of the portfolios and it seems that partaking in this, and drinking wins you favour. There is a sense of an old boys club in some parts of the business.

    - A company which is unrealistic in the 'formula' it applies to the work e.g. the headcount to number of shows (despite the shows being wildly different in their requirements), the targets which are set year on year which do not take into account any historic data. This means that people go into the next year's events not even believing that this is achievable/ their bonus means nothing - I have seen so many demoralised people.

    Conseils à la direction

Start to look after your people, and the events/ profits will take care of themselves.

J'ai travaillé chez Clarion Events à temps plein (Plus de 5 ans)

    Avantages

Vast opportunities for travel, coupled with a generous expenses policy. The epitome of the 'work hard/play hard' onsite for most events.

Mostly excellent people within the portfolio I worked on

Good location - 10 minutes walk from Putney Station, 30 seconds walk from Putney Bridge Underground, 15 mins bus from Fulham Broadway

If the staff are anything like they were when I was there, you'll make fantastic friends and they help you through your most stressful times.

Vast sums of money have been pumped into the company from recent refinancings, and could represent excellent opportunities

    Inconvénients

The staff turnover is absolutely vast. Ask about employee retention at interview - I was there for several years and saw literally hundreds of staff come and go, out of a staff of 900-1000.

The culture at a management level is frankly toxic. Nepotism is rife, and it becomes a case of near-alcoholism trying to keep the attention of senior staff. Employees are frequently mistreated by senior staff, a vast majority of whom worked together early in their careers and now protect each other through thick and thin. This is especially true of Directors and Event managers, some of whom have been kept on despite allegations of bullying and abuse of staff.

Salaries are atrocious. Those salaries that are higher than a £20k base are sales, and the management will frequently change targets mid-campaign, resulting in staff dis-satisfaction and hugely increased stress.

You can be expected to do the work of 3 or 4 staff at times, as the management are mostly unwilling to spend an extra. It is worth noting that directors receive a profit share bonus each year, so their focus is not their staff.

There is no paid overtime, and the holiday in lieu is pathetic

    Conseils à la direction

Clarion could be an excellent place to work - the shows are world-class, the travel and the opportunities huge. But the staff are a hugely undervalued resource! When staff leave in droves and you constantly have to hire temps, it is an indicator of either a toxic culture or poor pay - and both are true.

Protect the valuable staff you have. Bear in mind, although sales return may not meet the (sometimes ridiculous) target, the individual may be a core for their show team. Having a knowledge bank who is personable and well liked works wonders for a team under huge amounts of stress

Invest in your systems more efficiently.
