    For some of my time there I worked with great leadership that had a clear vision of what needed to be done in certain areas of science, and how this work would integrate with the business. There was also clarity in terms of expectations of what could be accomplished in this scientific area, and the uses to which these exercises could be put. In general, work with peers, senior direct reports, and more junior... colleagues was a pleasure; partly because of the personalities involved, and partly because of general Cummins values which are emphasized at all levels of the company.

    The highest levels of senior leadership exhibited poor communication on general strategy in this area, and they didn't ask the right people for advice on the decisions they were making. This would apply to both staffing decisions, and to the technical details of the work being done. It often appeared that job titles were mismatched to actual skills in an area, and that 20 years at Cummins counted for a lot more than... 20 years in a technical field. While technical expertise is no guarantee of success in any organization, building larger bureaucracies will surely discourage innovation and drive in an area that should be working more as a "start-up" than as an entrenched part of the business. There was virtually no representation of the scientific knowledge and scientific experience required to do this job at any level of senior management.

    Hire the right people for technical leadership and listen to them. Cummins doesn't need another interminable powerpoint deck documenting processes with a few hypothetical technical examples. Significantly improve your communication both through ad hoc communication to different levels of the org, and through formal all hands meetings. "Get **** done" should be the mantra rather than "give me xx slides on topic yy to... show senior leadership".

    Inconvénients

    Culture of leaders being incapable of aligning on most fundamental strategies and sticking to them through execution. Constantly changing priorities with local plants, BU's always fighting change.

    Alignment all the way through organization. matrix decision making is going to kill this company, it prevents the agility to move quickly and adapt to a changing market, environment, customer landscape and customer expectations. 2019 and still NO e-commerce strategy, that shows the lack of agility

    Hire more technical people in IT. There is a big dependency on vendors to make technical decisions rather than employees. This often results in vendors just selling unnecessary stuff.

    Inconvénients

    Low quality talent pool, hard to get things done. Diversity police in HR control all hiring. Executive team is out of touch.

    The employees are capable, eager to do a good job, and have a lot of ideas on how to make things better. Cummins attracts a lot of capable people.

    A lot of your managers don't treat their employees with respect and fairness. In some places it could be considered a hostile work environment. Many of the groups in IT use rules to find ways NOT to help those who need it instead of help. H/R is a constant barrier to progress.

    Leadership is focused on driving results for shareholders and puts a lot of emphasis on diversity, ethics and compliance. Encourages teamwork and collaboration. Plenty of career opportunities to move around if you are the lower level in the organization.

    Inconvénients

    Sometimes it feels they are focused on short term results to meet shareholder expectations. Career growth may be stalling if you are not willing to relocate to headquarter location.
