Je travaille chez Lazard à temps plein

    Avantages

    - Extremely high quality work and learning opportunities (if you want to take advantage of them) - Good exit options due to brand name - Strong senior bankers and good deal flow (depends on sector team though; some are weak - do your research!)

    Inconvénients

    - Still has the oppressive culture of a 1980s/1990s investment bank, but in a world that has since moved on - no one is getting rich in banking anymore... - Work/life balance is unnecessarily poor; false deadlines are a constant feature, and fear of senior bankers drives a lot of 'panicked' over-work at the VP/Director level - Very very hierarchical; even VPs are lucky to go to client meetings most of the time.... Associates and analysts can forget about it

    Conseils à la direction

I don't even know. The trade-off still makes sense at the analyst and associate level, but only as an apprenticeship for max 2 years. The IB world has moved on in terms of culture, lifestyle, personal development opportunities; I think Lazard in the next 5 years is going to see a really, really serious decline in ability to generate management organically (i.e. Associates staying on to VP). But the path to a better... culture is truly unclear in a organization that is so rigidly siloed between sector groups. Good luck!

    Avantages

Prestigious name M&A deal flow Lean deal teams provide a great experience/development (provided you are proactive) Very smart people The street recognizes the high caliber of the firm so the name will open a lot of doors. Unlike most large firms, as a junior person you will handle a lot more responsibility and and accountability.

    Inconvénients

Difficult/impersonal culture Long hours/ difficult lifestyle Job security There is a fair amount of turnover at the firm with analysts regularly leaving early for PE/HF or just burning out. Also, mid- and senior-level bankers often leave due to being passed over for promotion or being fired outright for no apparent reason other than there was no MD pulling for them. Politics play a big role here. The rest of... Wall Street generally recognizes this.

    Avantages

Lazard has a great reputation and is generally a good place to work. The place has some very talented and reputed senior level bankers. Deal quality and flow is generally good and since it is not a bulge-bracket, you avoid some of the non-sensical pitching you see at the larger banks.

    Inconvénients

The company is light on admin and you often have to get a whole lot of work admin done yourself. The offices are dated and in need of new furniture. Primary focus is US and UK, France in Europe. Insignificant in Asia.

    Conseils à la direction

There needs to be more communication between regions and offices. I feel each office and country is run like a separate bank. There is less sharing of information or data or ideas than one sees in more global banks
