    Avantages

    You learn how to "sell".

    Inconvénients

You have to sell to your family and friends which can possibly terminante the little relationships you have as a 20 something year old. Total scheme, they recruit anyone in college/out of college to get in contact with their connections to try and sell them life insurance and keep the client. If this is something you are considering while you are in college, stay away! You won't learn anything other than "how to sell", and basically sit through awkward meetings with family and friends while a rep attempts to sell them something.

J'ai travaillé chez Northwestern Mutual en Contrat Permanent (Pendant plus de 10 ans)

    Avantages

I started back in 1991 and had a 15 year career at NM. It was extremely difficult at first, with the prospecting, cold calling, and referral marketing. Eventually, though, you begin to generate revenue from your activities because you are the best trained financial advisor in the industry and you look like a million bucks with your suit on and all. The turbulence of full commission eventually smooths out as you gain a stronger foothold in the career. Along the way, you have enjoyed trips to Milwaukee, New Orleans, Dallas, Atlanta, and Orlando. These are company meetings. And you no doubt travelled on your own to other far off places because you make an above average income(NM reps outproduce their competitors because the products and training are superior). The company is top-notch. It leads every category that one can measure in financial services....revenue, insurance placed, low expenses, dividend paying history, and the list goes on. The arsenal of facts that you can bring to an engagement is pretty darn impressive and it helps make that sale. It really does. All the people are great, motivated, self starters with goals on their minds. NM is the vehicle that will help those goals to be realized. NM is based out of Milwaukee, WI and you get to go there at leas once a year. However, if you become active in the Advisor association, you can travel up ther quarterly to attend meetings in the Fortune 100 headquarters which happens to be spectacular. You will also get your own financial house in order as you begin to make money and succeed in helping others with theirs. Recognition is also very prevalent at the company. You have local office contests all the time and the company has annual and semi-annual contests that also results in lots of recognition opportunities. The top 20 advisors in the country are recognized each year on stage and at the annual company show which they always book a famous singer such as Brooks and Dunn or whoever. Those are fun shows as is the annual garden party at the Milwaukee Zoo. Lots of free beer and food and walking around meeting the other 7000 attendees.

    Inconvénients

The biggest downside everyone talks about is 100% commission income. You basically ‘eat what you kill’. The beginning of the career is the hardest. It has been said that there is a price to pay for success in this business. That price is effort, hard work, tenacity, and fortitude. Everyone in the business will have, or already has, paid that price. The beauty of it is you get to decide when to pay it. It is my advice to pay it in the beginning, right away. Get it over with. This means ingrained yourself in the prospecting activities that you will need to do...work later hours..work weekends initially, this is paying the price. Another negative might be that there is no salary. This is tied to the full commission negative. While this may be the case, your upside is unlimited and, believe me, there is lots of upside. The products are tremendous and the compensation is too, Compliance these days is a big negative in my view. I know why it is needed but it can be a royal pain the butt. Depending on where you locate, management can be a pain also. Always breathing down your neck and requiring the attendance at meetings. Still, management generally knows what they are doing and are trying to help you in the end. The better you do, the better they do.

    Conseils à la direction

I might advise management to step on the throttle. There can not be a better financial position that the company has ever been in. I follow NM quite a bit since I own $2 million in life insurance and have my disability coverage through them as well. I also see their AUM(assets under management) is growing like a weed. That’s something we never really had when I was a rep. In terms of a huge company focus. Financial ratings are the highest among competitors too. There can’t be a better time to become a NM rep in my opinion.

    Avantages

There are too many pros to list. I'll start with the culture.

This is a very family oriented environment and culture driven. There are activities in this office, cultivated and organized by the management team that involve everyone in the office. Things like office breakfasts (sometimes even homemade by the management team), a push cart of goodies during holidays (I specifically remember the Valentine's one being very fun and generous), a ping pong table, among other activities. This makes coming in to the office fun, and breaks up the monotony.

Nice, clean, organized office - it's pristine and unique. When you walk in to the office you don't get the feel of the cube farm. Coming to a clean, new, fresh work place is refreshing.

The company as a whole is beyond amazing and does wonderful things for clients. One thing I hear while working at the Northwestern Mutual is to always do what is right by the client. The company does that, even at the detriment of itself. I've never been embarrassed or had to sugar coat something that the company has done. There are amazing people in every position, from those developing interns and reps, to those backing the Financial Advisors, to the advisors themselves. It's incredible to see large scale events that the primary focus is to be better to the clientele, be better to each other and be better to oneself.

    Inconvénients

Every career has it's pros and cons. Long hours, the work is never done, this isn't a unique con. It's hard work, it takes total buy in, this isn't a "job" in a box. There is constant evolution with the changing of technology and financial industry.

    Conseils à la direction

Keep up with the cultural diversity - very cool initiative. Keep up with the different ideas on building and evolving the culture - that's the best thing you can do for your offices and practices.

Je travaille chez Northwestern Mutual à plein temps (Pendant plus de 5 ans)

    Avantages

Over the past 5 years I have been working with the firm, I have grown to understand more about how Northwestern as a platform to begin and grow your financial advisory business seems tough to beat. While NM has allowed me exclusive access to their insurance and investment advisory platform, they also are not captive to just their products and which helps me feel confident when doing financial planning.

5 years in so far and I have yet to run into a situation that I had to question any ethical or moral move that NM has made. With them acquiring learnvest to turn themselves into one of the largest tech financial firms in the US, I am excited to see where they go over the next few decades.

    Inconvénients

The first few years of building your own practice is tough. While Northwestern prides themselves on their training program and mentorship, at the end of the day, your business thrives or fails based on how much you are willing to work on crafting your skills and building your client relationships.

I have seen a lot of people not willing to put the time and energy into starting their own business and end up leaving the career with a bitter taste because they were to focused on "selling" instead of "planning".

If you are just trying to be an insurance agent or an investment advisor, this isn't the group to join. I have realized NM's focus and current competitive advantage is their focus on comprehensive financial planning that isn't just about selling products.

    Conseils à la direction

Many people think NM is just an insurance company but the leadership needs to start educating people that NM is one of the top 5 investment brokers in the US.

J'ai travaillé chez Northwestern Mutual en Contrat Permanent (Pendant plus de 5 ans)

    Avantages

I had worked for just under 20 years in a few different roles/companies before I landed at Hollee Kier's office at NM in Clearwater, FL. Prior to NM, I had not experienced the level of personal and professional development anywhere. The entire firm -from the Managing Partner to the Managing Director (Hollee Kier in my case) - has a culture of caring about you as a person, a professional, a leader; as a wife, mother...whatever role you fill or want to fill. Hollee's goal was to help me be the best ME that I could be, starting with helping me become a great advisor who could serve my clients well. The career is hard no doubt, but there is no better place to begin and succeed as with NM. Hollee is a great leader with integrity, and the right mix of "get it done" attitude and empathy for new advisors. If you live in Pinellas, anywhere near Clearwater, and you are looking at becoming a financial advisor, you need to get in touch with Hollee Kier's office and meet with her.

    Inconvénients

This is such a rewarding career, if you can get it off the ground, gain momentum, and be successful. It is the toughest thing you will ever do, but worth the risk of trying.

    Company pays for additional certifications
The advisors I worked for gave some flexibility for working mom

    Inconvénients

    Stressful position
Massive workload, and not enough time or people to handle it

Financial industry is very rigid with lots of continually changing hoops to jump through

    Conseils à la direction

Give more recognition to associates, not just financial representatives.

    Avantages

The Culture and Environment: I love working at NM and with Hollee's team because she has created a fun, family-friendly environment. She leads by the example of always doing the right thing in every situation even when it is to her own detriment. I watch her time and time again go above and beyond for people - her clients, employees and the advisers in her office. I have watched her allow employees to take time off to help their families in times of need, I have watched her personally drive those on her team to Dr appointments and pay the bill, just because. Our team has earned Fridays off for a quarter for hitting goals. We have taken cruises with our families. We take a quarterly team adventure to have new experiences. All of these things add to the culture and environment Hollee has worked so hard to build at the NM Clearwater.

Vision and Goal Oriented: As a female in the industry it has been inspiring to watch someone with strong religious and family values push to be one of the top females in management within the Firm. She holds herself and her team to high quality and moral standards. Hollee is a role model to young female advisers that come into our Agency. Even when she has nothing to gain from it, she goes out of her way to mentor anyone who asks for help. I have seen Hollee encourage and push her team and the advisers in the office towards their personal and professional goals. She encourages everyone to have a vision and go for it.

    Inconvénients

The hours and demands be tough sometimes, but i have worked at plenty of companies that had the exact same expectations with none of the pros I listed above. Working with clients in handling their finances can be stressful at times which is to be expected. People trust us with their family's financial security, that is a big responsibility. I have watched Hollee rightfully earn her client's trust to manage this responsibility.

    Conseils à la direction

Keep fighting the good fight and maybe loosen up a bit because you're never going to make everyone happy, no matter how hard you try.
