Je travaille chez Rackspace à plein temps (Pendant plus de 3 ans)

    Avantages

New leadership + Apollo + TriCore + DataPipe = some new life and much needed organizational changes. Hopefully once the dust settles, this will be great company to work for again, with talented people and a strong product offering.

    Inconvénients

So many changes over the last 2-3 years... "culture" has declined a bit, but still better than many. IMO, as the culture morphs into a more corporate workplace, they need to balance that with pay increases to retain top talent.

    Conseils à la direction

Prioritize retaining top talent by increasing pay. Stop retaining poorly performing employees and leaders who operate as hurdles within the business. Try to understand the current ecosystem and past leadership initiatives (good and bad) before making to many changes.

Je travaille chez Rackspace à plein temps (Pendant plus de 8 ans)

    Avantages

Rackspace is a fast paced working environment that is always evolving. My role in the organization comes with a lot of autonomy, which I like. I have the opportunity to provide input while forming strategies and flexibility on how I achieve goals. The entrepreneur in me loves this way of working!

    Inconvénients

Change is frequent. If you are not adaptable and don't like change then Rackspace would not be the ideal employer. However, if something new around each corner excites you and you are tired of a mundane working environment, then you may like the change.

    Conseils à la direction

I wish that Rackspace would bring back a "People first" mentality. The current focus seems to be more around following processes than what is right for the individual Racker (aka employee.)

J'ai travaillé chez Rackspace en Contrat Permanent (Pendant plus de 5 ans)

    Avantages

    - Engineering and support teams are full of excellent techs. The technical standards are high so you're always learning from your colleagues.
    - Great culture of mentorship on the support teams I worked on, lots of senior techs willing to help you learn and managers supporting you taking time to attend training etc. Strong on boarding, and continuous feedback on your work makes personal growth really easy, lots of opportunity for promotion and taking on more senior roles/responsibility on the teams I worked for.
    - Company really does seem to have the right intentions with regard to work/life balance, perks and taking care of employees. The benefits package is great and the office in the UK has plenty of amenities.
    - Now that company is private again they seem to be getting back to the original focus on core products and less attention being paid to just churning out quarterly results. Long term investment in a single strategy will hopefully pay off in the future.
    - Basically everyone I worked with was smart, driven and fundamentally nice. If you have even the slightest desire to learn and advance your technical career you'll be afforded plenty of opportunities to do so.

    Inconvénients

    - Management at a senior level in the UK isn't great. There's a real 'old boys' network where those closest to senior execs get promoted constantly and are not up to the task.
    - That leads to an excess of 'middle managers' where people get stuck unable to move up the chain and so end up having positions at the same lateral level created for them ending up with too many middle managers. The benefit is they tend to not be bad managers, so you'll probably end up with a good line manager, but their effectiveness is reduced because there's so many of them and they have no real ability to make changes as a result.
    - Company has historically not focused on support teams enough, they like to make sweeping changes of work patterns, or not invest enough in support. That leads to burnout and people leaving and an inability to fill their roles with equally senior techs.

    Conseils à la direction

    - Now that you don't have to play the stock market game just stick to one long term strategy for a while, this will pay off better in future.
    - Look at internal promotion strategy, it doesn't look great when your senior executives are promoting their close personal friends into other senior roles. Really ensure that if this happens the people being promoted have good feedback from a variety of peers and other business segments otherwise it's very discouraging and transparent what's happening.
    - Make sure you prioritise tech support teams. They are after all your primary product, the happier they are the better they will work and the more talent you can attract into those teams.

Je travaille chez Rackspace à plein temps (Pendant plus de 8 ans)

    Avantages

Many awesome people striving to do the best they possibly can, some real diamonds in the rough, and lots of opportunity to be mentored if you are in the right place.

    Great health benefits.

    Inconvénients

Lack of leadership. Uncertainty is the name of the game at Rackspace where you just aren't sure what is going to happen next. Innovative internal services often go unnoticed to senior management and product is managed by leaders who do not understand the products and don't trust in their owners.

Rackspace was once a great place to work. Today it's in tatters unable to find its true identity and has too many focuses.

    Conseils à la direction

Stop changing things that do not need changing, stop and listen to those around you. And stop rewarding employees who aren't willing to move forward. Properly reward those who ARE moving forward and are excited to develop new and exciting ways of doing business.

    And above all.. LISTEN.

    Avantages

Most co workers are great to be around. Training and tools are readily available. Onsite gym and various food vendors

    Inconvénients

Limited ceiling/career path obstruct you from growing within the company unless in a specialized position. Below market pay for majority of non specialized positions.

    Conseils à la direction

Invest in top talent within the company rather than searching externally. Keep top performers paid well and recognized.

Je travaille chez Rackspace à plein temps (Pendant plus de 3 ans)

    Avantages

What got me to Rackspace and what kept me there for over 3 years (just put my notice) is the culture of the company. They truly treat each other as friends and family! I've made great friends working there and I had a lot of fun.

The technical training is great. They provide you with the tools to learn but it's really up to you on devoting the time to learn complex technologies.

Great engineers and architects that are always willing to help you.

The Castle is an amazing place to work! I'm going to miss going to that building. The food trucks on Tuesdays & Fridays are cool. The yearly dodge ball event is so cool! They have nice gyms, onsite massage therapists and just cool amenities.

    Free soda and snacks.

    Inconvénients

Pay is significantly below market rates. They preach the values, how great the culture is but culture does not pay the bills.

With the move of going private and the last two acquisitions (TriCore & DataPipe), the company has what looks to be on paper a good strategy going forward. The issue that I've dealt with for the past year is that the company goes into too many directions. There's not a clear vision of the strategy going forward. They preach the hybrid cloud and being able to manage client's infrastructure regardless of the technology they use but it's not quite like that.

From a sales perspective, the leadership will push you to sell dedicated infra (servers, firewalls, load balancers) and get you to tack on security software. On the other hand, if you are a cloud specialist focused on AWS, you are always fighting internally with reps on what solutions to pitch to the client. At the end of the day sales people will push what is easy to sell and what gets them paid quicker, which is always dedi servers.

The compensation plans are very low. I've held 4 positions at the company and I consistently saw my pay lowered. My last year I increased my earnings but because of all of the changes in the company, I was not sure if my position would still exist. Rackspace is really good about getting you to do lateral moves and finding a way to pay you less when you do it.

I think it's sad that Rackspace gives you a good technical training but keep losing people to the competition over pay. I have seen great sales and technical staff leave the company this year alone. Rackspace use to be the place where you stayed for 10+ years but not anymore. The culture that we all cherished seems to be ending quicker every day.

I love Rackspace and I wish nothing but success for the company. I hope they can find ways to retain the great employees they built and pay them fair wages according to market rates.

    Conseils à la direction

I heard several times that one of the top priorities for the company is to attract and retain top talent yet I see no changes in the company to make that a reality. I was shocked on how many people reached out to me, when they learned I gave my notice, asking if I could help them find another opportunity.

I did not want to leave the company but I felt that I had an unsure future and my pay was just way below market value. I received multiple offers and the lowest ones were 50% higher than what I make today. Several companies told me that they specifically target Rackspace employees because they have great work ethic, are tech savvy, and are not paid well, which makes easier to recruit them. In other words, Rackspace keeps training their competition.

Until you fix this, you will continue to lose top talent and have a hard time attracting better talent. I want you to know that I am taking the time to write this review because I truly care about Rackspace and I will miss it a lot. I hope this can give you some insights that can help you improve.
