Je travaille chez Scottish Water à temps partiel (Pendant plus de 8 ans)

    Avantages

Great team to work for, fair and flexible, inclusive and opportunities for varied work and pretty decent pay and benefits (bearing in mind it's public sector so base pay and bonus are never going to be top whack but pension is excellent). SW has a conscience regards the environment and feels responsibility to serve the people of Scotland well, aiming high to be innovative and not rest on our laurels.

    Inconvénients

Public sector salary scales; change can be slower with more bureaucratic processes to wade through as there's politics and regulatory bodies to convince en route.

    Conseils à la direction

Things are on the right track! SW is a great place to work.

J'ai travaillé chez Scottish Water (Plus d'un an)

    Avantages

Amazing team members and such a great overall team feeling, everyone makes you feel welcome. Excellent training from the team members. You get the ability to do front end maintenance in instruments such as HPLC and GC, which you don't get elsewhere.

    Inconvénients

Worst communication I have ever witnessed in a company. There is a high turnover rate for a reason. The management don't treat you anything more than a number. Makes it hard to think of the pros when the cons are so important.

    Conseils à la direction

Communicate better and stop treating contract staff with such little respect.

J'ai travaillé chez Scottish Water (Plus d'un an)

    Avantages

Good friendly atmosphere most of the time. Reasonable facilities and environment in which to work.

    Inconvénients

After IR35 rule changes in afraid mossy contract jobs are viewed as inside IR35

    Conseils à la direction

    Keep up the good work

    Avantages

Interesting work and providing an important public service.

    Inconvénients

Jobs and promotions can be done clandestinely without a job advert and associated recruitment drive. In some cases, although a recruitment drive is carried out, it's done in a manner that is not consistent with other recruitment drives carried out by Scottish Water; for example, not advertising a job in the usual recruitment channels/platforms. No matter your technical ability and commitment to the company, if the company wants to recruit someone externally, or promote someone internally, the first you may find out is the person turning up to start work (if you are not in that team) or if it's internal, you may discover after a while.

Salary - for most, salaries are lower compared to the rest of the public sector but interestingly, Scottish Water has a large 'management' class of employees whose salaries information is opaque and how this class sits with the rest of the public sector, i don't know.

Pension - went from being final salary to career average; in order to work out how "excellent" the pension is, i suggest you go to a person trained in pensions to give you advice and then you will work out exactly how Scottish Water, as well as public sector pensions, rank compared to what you can do privately. Please remember, the distinction between a defined benefit pension and a defined contribution pension (typically what you get in the private sector) - these are 2 different types of pensions and so when doing comparisons with input from a person trained in pensions, keep this critically important factor in mind.

Also keep in mind, that you may not even reach your pension and pensions, as with anything controlled by government, can change whether it's tax treatment or things like age of retirement. A pension is not classed as income when you are applying for a mortgage, or a car loan, or a personal loan. Pensions are important but you have a whole life of costs, and events that give rise to costs, to cater for before you reach your pension and this is where your salary becomes critical and is probably the key/only tool that you will have to deal with inflation and shrinking public services (think of the various cost-cutting exercises of public services that have taken place in Scotland since 2007).

A decent salary, and opportunities which are open to all, are important factors in my view and the sign of a progressive, modern, workplace.

    Avantages

Agile working, nice people, lots of opportunities for the right people, paid volunteering days, nice away days at posh hotels.

    Inconvénients

Too much movement of staff. Too many contractors. Bullying at senior levels. Preference to male staff and women without families. A lot of covering up of true figures. An ancient version of P6 is used but final reports come from 'elsewhere'.

    Conseils à la direction

We all know that green line isn't true...we aren't complete muppets!

J'ai travaillé chez Scottish Water en Contrat Permanent (Pendant plus de 5 ans)

    Avantages

the shop floor workers are honest hardworking without them the company will collapse

    Inconvénients

Managerial bullying , managerial self righteousness, H.R fully in the management control the managers oversee everything and have no real accountability other than to each other bullying corruption and self management are the words of the day with no comeback when a manager is dismissed he is paid off with a whopping great salary related pension and other sweetheart deals

    Conseils à la direction

make management accountable to the staff and allow staff to review management

J'ai travaillé chez Scottish Water en Contrat Permanent (Pendant plus de 5 ans)

    Avantages

Worked on a lot of interesting projects with excellent PMs and project engineers, and contractor delivery partners. Very good people. Reported to 3 different MQSs in my time, all of whom were very good at their jobs and more importantly exceptional people.

    Inconvénients

Too much emphasis on meeting P6 spend profiles led to some people matching these & being better thought of rather than reporting reality and giving truthful variance explanations,l.

    Conseils à la direction

Some managers were a lot better at valuing their teams and encouraging them than others - be consistent.

Je travaille chez Scottish Water à plein temps (Moins d'un an)

    Avantages

Good holidays. Flexible hours. Agile working. Lots of opportunities for training. Understand the need to invest in their workforce.

    Inconvénients

Communication between departments could be improved. Sometimes you can lose visibility on tasks that you have passed on so do not know their progress.

    Conseils à la direction

    Continue on your current path.

J'ai travaillé chez Scottish Water (Plus d'un an)

    Avantages

The role came with multiple benefits typical on the public sector, such as a generous pension and holiday allowance, as well as flexi-time.

    Inconvénients

The day to day tasks are very mundane, and every time you want to put forward an idea, you have to go through 7 different layers of management to get the approval. That's one of the main issues: the huge amount of middle managers who are not qualified for the position but managed to get there due to having been in the company since the dawn of time. IT is always an issue, old equipment and incredibly reluctant to change or even allow new software to be introduced. A good place to work if you want to have an easy life and have no ambition.

    Conseils à la direction

Assess whether the company needs that huge ratio of managers to employees, as well as ensure they are qualified for the position they are in.

Je travaille chez Scottish Water à plein temps (Plus d'un an)

    Avantages

Work/life balance. Essentially left to work whenever so long as the work is done. Nice office environments. Good people overall.

    Inconvénients

Riddled with over governance. Nobody really willing to put their name to a decision. Salary is well below par. General public sector slowness.

    Conseils à la direction

Stop filling senior roles with agency workers. Let actual staff progress.
