    Avantages

    Great telework options and flexible schedules.

    Inconvénients

    Raises aren't based on performance but standard for everyone. The best way to get promoted is to move around departments.

    J'ai travaillé chez Washington Department of Health à temps plein (Plus de 3 ans)

    Avantages

    Co-workers, work itself, helping the community, location, infant at work program.

    Inconvénients

    Management does not appreciate education. If you are not in with management you are out. Gossip is rampant. Few to no opportunities for growth. Supervisors lack consistent training. Intimidation tactics used frequently. Positive feedback is almost non-existent. Turnover is extremely high across the agency.

    Conseils à la direction

    Do not tolerate bullying in the workplace. Listen to employee concerns. Don't drag your feet when there are serious issues on the ground level.

    -great work-life balance
    -meaningful work that is directly applicable

    Inconvénients

    -as with all government jobs, the bureaucracy can be draining--lots of red tape, especially if you are non-DOH fellow
    -salary is not as competitive as the private sector

    Je travaille chez Washington Department of Health à plein temps (Plus de 3 ans)

    Avantages

    Schedule flexibility
    Always has job openings
    Work-life balance

    Inconvénients

    Hard to move up
    Not that diverse

  6. « Great people and a learning environment »

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Employé actuel - Employé anonyme
    Employé actuel - Employé anonyme

    Avantages

    Always an opportunity to learn more and shadow other labs. Friendly people and place to work with a laid back atmosphere. The lab staff is a mix of recent graduates to middle age. Appreciation is shown to employees through potlucks, monthly birthday celebrations, and other small social events. Flexible and easy to take time off and take lunch and breaks wherever it works best with your schedule. When new supplies or instruments are needed it is provided.

    Inconvénients

    Very hard to move up unless someone quits or retires. Pay is not great compared to the cost of living in the area. Employees that are salary are treated like hourly (even if work is done you must stay til the bell rings). The Shoreline lab gets forgotten and doesn’t get all the great benefits of the Tumwater campus even though we still receive emails about events that are not relevant to lab staff.

    Conseils à la direction

    Don’t turn a blind eye to negative feedback and acknowledge when feedback is given. Collaborate with other managers to promote more cross training.

    Avantages

    Amazing people and inspiring leadership;
    Contributions to really important work;
    Opportunities for professional growth and development;
    INFANTS AT WORK;

    Inconvénients

    The organization is big and the culture can vary by what team your on. I loved my team but knew there was variation across the organization.

    Conseils à la direction

    Keep on providing more opportunities for professionals at every stage of their career to take on new opportunities and grow!

    Je travaille chez Washington Department of Health à plein temps (Plus de 3 ans)

    Avantages

    Great coworkers and interesting projects (sometimes). A lot of potlucks, laid back atmosphere, supports the health of the citizens of Washington.

    Inconvénients

    this is specific to the HTS (health technology solutions) group: if you are applying for a project management job or a few other groups, unless you are male and specifically white middle aged male, you will not be hired. If you have a disability , health issues, or need accommodations, you will not be approved. The open office environment is very distracting yet it is mandatory to be present and physically in the office and at your expected location even if it is a day to work from home. If you are someone's favorite than you are great but if you cross the wrong person, forget about being left alone. You will be harassed, pushed out, ignored and bullied until you leave. Flexibility is only for star players, not equally permitted for everyone. It really comes down to your supervisor. if you have a progressive, open minded, professional for a supervisor, then you will enjoy working here. if not, good luck!

    Conseils à la direction

    Why do you allow bullying and discrmination even after the governor has signed a directive that this will not be tolerated? With the cost of housing and the horrible congestion on the roads, why do you not allow remote work, even after the governor signed a directive specifically allowing this? People commute from Auburn, Portland, and everywhere in between yet you offer no recognition of just how expensive it is to do this, not to mention the physical exhaustion and loss of productivity. Do not promote yourself as an employer of choice when "choice" is not what you are offering.

    Je travaille chez Washington Department of Health à plein temps (Plus de 3 ans)

    Avantages

    Newer buildings and that's about it folks.

    Inconvénients

    Individual achievement is not valued and you will be shunned for your efforts. They want you to bring "all of you to work" but the part that makes you stand out from the rest professionally should be left at home. They also experience a high turnover rate because of this, coupled with their poor reputation, leaving many positions unfilled for months upon months. Employees openly talk about transferring out of DOH to another State agency just to escape the toxic environment. HR is worthless, non-supportive, and uninformed about employee rights leaving the agency wide open for future litigation and creating an us vs. them mentality within the workforce. Also, everyone must worship the Secretary of Health as if he is some sort of higher spirit. Very strange. Don't accept a job and drink their Kool-Aid. Find another place to work where you will be valued and respected.

    Conseils à la direction

    Get rid of upper management and do more to retain your already fragile workforce.

    Je travaille chez Washington Department of Health à plein temps (Plus d'un an)

    Avantages

    Great benefits. One of the best state agencies as far as teleworking and flexible schedules. Epidemiologists are well respected in the agency. Some supervisors are great.

    Inconvénients

    Bureaucracy can be frustrating. Managers don't seem to have a clue and keep staff out of decision making process.

    Conseils à la direction

    Improving communication isn't about sending emails to employees, it's about listening to what your employees are telling you.
