    Entretien de Senior Director Engineering

J'ai postulé en ligne. J'ai passé un entretien à AppFolio.

    Entretien

First, there was a 30-minute phone interview by an in-house technical recruiter to make sure you are a good fit and are within the salary range. Then there was a second phone interview by the VP who will be making the hiring decision. The VP was over 20 minutes late for the interview, which caused a lot of stress because I was wondering if I had somehow messed up the schedule or my contact information. The lateness was not acknowledged at all by the VP, no apology, or any kind of indication that he was over 20 minutes late, we just went right into the interview. This doesn't create a good impression on the candidate. However, aside from that, the conversation itself was very pleasant which is why I'm giving this a neutral rating.

    Candidature

J'ai postulé en ligne. J'ai passé un entretien à AppFolio (Santa Barbara, CA (États-Unis)) en août 2020.

The HR person scheduled an interview on 8/12. The day and time of the interview, she said she was busy and rescheduled for 8/19. I didn't hear from her again until 8/24 where she said sorry and rescheduled for 8/27. I said I was ready. On 8/27, I did not get any call, instead, I got an email saying the job has been filled.

Overall, very unprofessional and it was just 2 weeks of false hope for me. Hope others have a better experience.

Applied online for the available position and the recruiter reached out to get more information about my background and scheduled a technical screening with an engineer.

The Technical screening was horrible. The interviewer kept joining in and out of the call due to connection issues, had constant background sounds and was unresponsive to questions I asked. Also, he kept looking down at his phone throughout the interview. There were no preliminary questions asked, the interviewer jumped straight into a coding question.

After 30 minutes, he said the equivalent of "time's up" and moved on to a design problem. At this point another interviewer had jumped onto the call randomly. In another 10 min, the first interviewer said that he was having technical difficulties with the call and dropped off.
Spent the rest of the interview speaking with the other interviewer which was a much more pleasant experience.

The first interviewer (the hiring manager) was a very rude person. I feel like I dodged a bullet because he would have made a pretty horrible boss.

    Entretien de Public Records Analyst

    Candidature

J'ai postulé en ligne. Le processus a pris 2 semaines. J'ai passé un entretien à AppFolio en juillet 2020.

    Entretien

There were three interviews, one with HR, one with a peer, and one with the manager and director. I was very disappointed with the way the Appfolio team handled the situation, everything went well, but it took three weeks after the interviews to hear anything back. I was overqualified for the position, but because they want to pay on the lower end, they don't want to shell out for good employees. Appfolio is very cliquey so if you don't know someone on the inside, you probably won't get the job.

The interview process was alright. The recruiter really helped to inform me about the company and role. I was scheduled to meet over Zoom with the hiring manger, that turned into a group interview. Everything seemed to go well. I was told I would hear back the following week. I got ghosted and haven't heard back from them since then.

The interview process was rigorous but when you make it through and meet your peers - you understand why! I couldn't ask for a better team to work with! My interview process consisted of three interviews all of which happened fairly quickly after the other. I first interviewed with HR which felt less formal and I had the opportunity to ask some hard questions given the COVID-19 circumstances that they did not shy away from answering (thank you!). The next interview was with my current Key Account Manager. This was more formal with scripted questions reviewing my job history. Lastly, I had a 2-hour interview with a variety of co-workers (upper management and peer). Each asked different questions (a lot of the questions made you think so taking a moment will happen!). This was the toughest interview of the three but not in the way they intentionally try to stump you. They are more in-depth to gauge your knowledge and understanding. (Note, these interviews were either conducted via phone or zoom due to current circumstances.)

Had three rounds of interviews, first a short phone call, then a second virtual zoom call with two of the managers, then lastly another zoom call meeting with three of the managers. Overall it was a standard process of interviews.

    Entretien de Senior Software Engineer

    Entretien

Applied online for the available position and the recruiter reached out to get more information about my background and scheduled a technical screening with an engineer.

The technical screening was a really bad experience. The interviewer joined the interview 10 minutes late and started off without even an apology for the delay. Asked a couple of vague questions about web services and then jumped to a coding question via Coderpad. He did not even pay attention to what I was explaining while solving the problem. He gave a different variation of the problem after I solved the first one and sat back on his chair looking at the ceiling while I was solving it.

    Entretien de Product Marketing Manager

    Candidat à l'entretien anonyme - San Diego, CA (États-Unis)
    Offre déclinée
    Expérience négative
    Difficulté moyenne

    Candidature

J'ai postulé en ligne. Le processus a pris +3 mois. J'ai passé un entretien à AppFolio (San Diego, CA (États-Unis)) en février 2020.

    Entretien

The process was incredibly slow, nearly 2 1/2 months before an offer was made. Started with a simple phone interview with the recruiter, then a follow-up with the hiring manager. A third phone interview was conducted with both the recruiter and hiring manager. After which, a final in-person interview was held. For the in-person interview they gave me an assignment focused on positioning and messaging. It was fairly straight forward. I. had to present to a small group. Throughout the process their response was very slow and they offered little transparency on next steps.

The biggest issue was the offer. I was told from the beginning that they 'could' reach my compensation requirements. Admittedly there was a sizable gap, but the recruiter assured me there was flexibility. So, for 2 1/2 months I proceeded through the process thinking we were aligned. Based on the offer, we clearly were not. With no wiggle room, I had no choice but to decline. It's a shame because the company seemed fantastic, the people were great, I highly respected their culture, but in the end they strung me along knowing they couldn't make me a competitive offer. And for that, all respect is lost.

The people were great, the team was organized, everyone was professional. I can see why AppFolio would be a great place to work. However, the process was emotionally long, and I felt the team spent so much time on their process and them being ready that they forgot to give me the information I would need in order to be able to respond intelligently to their questions. Specifically, I was not given enough information about the team, company, priorities, goals, or overall organization to be able to adequately be able to prepare or formulate answers to their questions. Many questions were asked without context. Example: "What would be your priorities in this position?"....
me = "Can you tell me the corporate or team goals which have been set for this year?" ...
interviewer "No; I'd want X to tell you that" ...
me = "Can you tell me what the problem areas are?" ...
interviewer "No, imagine you don't have that data."
Me = "uh, well, I guess my first step would be to understand the business priorities and goals, and then understand the problem areas."
Interviewer = "Ok, but what would you focus on and how would you prioritize?"
    My brain = "Serenity NOW!"
