Let's start with the positive: I genuinely enjoyed everyone I met with virtually — and that's saying something, given that it was more than 10 people, including both co-founders and multiple executives. Questions were thoughtful and wide-ranging to cover a lot of ground. From there, it goes downhill: All told, BetterUp engaged me in conversations for two months, and I was bounced from interview to interview, and between multiple recruiters as well, about a new role they were supposedly envisioning, though it never ended up materializing into a concrete offer. After the "final" step in which I was asked to provide references, they informed me they would not be moving forward due to a "lack of headcount." The most egregious red flag: Due to an indeterminate technical error, BetterUp sent an interview invite to my current employer, which required damage control on my part to mitigate. A word of caution: Ask to add the interview information to your own calendar.
