J'ai postulé en ligne. J'ai passé un entretien à Elastic (Austin, TX (États-Unis)) en mars 2020.

    Entretien

The interviewer was candid, opening by asking what I wanted to know about the role. The company is growing quickly, so don't be surprised if job descriptions/requirements have changed since you applied.

apply - phone call - video call - then onsite?
They all have a history of being late for their calls/meetings. And then they will remove you from the process because of something they did even though you did everything you could. plus 3 weeks just to get 2 calls set..their process needs improving

I would not recommend interviewing here. At least not until they know how to value candidate's time. If they do that on the interview, IMAGINE what it would be like if you were to work there.

Complete waste of time, look elsewhere. Although I did not get an offer due to them believing I was not competent enough for the position, I wound up going through my four other >$150K offers and accepted a $170K, unlimited PTO, fully remote role elsewhere, if that gives you any idea as to how accurately your skills are judged in this process. Easily the most unprofessional interview process I have experienced. They were making things up as they went.

I spent a full month talking to people across several slowly-scheduled interviews. Aside from the glacial pace, conversation and personality-wise everything was great up until the code test. For background: I have a decade of experience working with big data (and small data), cleaning up data sources and preparing them for ETL pipelines, etc. I write clean, commented, efficient code, and even once designed and implemented an ETL analytics workflow that directly resulted in millions in revenue for a previous company and led to my promotion to work directly under the CEO & COO. With that in mind, I was told by Elastic that based on my submitted code sample that I would not be selected because they did not think I could parse data input to a program or acknowledge areas for improvement, both of which were inaccurate judgments. I could spend a lot of time going into the details of how flawed the code interview process was, but I'll leave you with a few highlights:
    * Having designed my own code review process and used it to hire 5 or so interns in the past, I know that a well-run code review process should feel like a welcoming, friendly, professional conversation. This came across as a grueling PhD qualifying exam experience. They would ask a question on how to improve something, I would acknowledge that the code was not as efficient as it could be and provide options for improvement, then ask for feedback, and get blank, cold emotional terse responses in return. I have never felt more un-welcomed in an interview process than I did during this code interview. It was very bizarre; the code interview seemed to be run by smart people with lacking social skills. It seemed to me as if the interviewers had no interest in engaging in a conversation but were instead asking a list of scripted questions and could not figure out how to respond to a real back-and-forth discussion.
    * They give you a large JSON sample dataset to use in a hackerrank environment that does not allow you to copy-paste that JSON so that you can use it in local-environment testing. Not a single person on the interviewing team that designed the problem was aware of this time-wasting flaw in their own testing environment. I had to manually transcribe JSON into an external test environment before I could even begin coding.
    * They verbally stated, multiple times in fact, that the quality of the code would not matter and would only be used as a starter point for discussion, so don't worry about making it messy and just stay within the 2h time limit. However, there was ultimately no time limit on the challenge, and other candidates more desperate for a job spent more than my self-imposed 2h time limit on the question to produce more ideal code. Ultimately, I imagine the most ideal code regardless of time spent on the problem is what resulted in job offers, despite convincing conversations indicating the opposite.

At the end of the day, interviewing here was not only a massive waste of my time but an insult to my well-established skillset. I have had a successful long-running career at well-known companies, but apparently I don't know how to parse data. Thankfully, there are a number of other companies out there that have a more professionally run interviewing process that gave me excellent offers. I highly recommend you respect yourself and look elsewhere.

    Entretien de Support Engineer

    Candidat à l'entretien anonyme
    Aucune offre d'embauche
    Expérience positive
    Difficulté moyenne

    Candidature

J'ai postulé en ligne. Le processus a pris une semaine. J'ai passé un entretien à Elastic en décembre 2019.

    Entretien

The interview was fairly typical - I had a phone interview with a recruiter that essentially made sure that you had relevant experience and were a good fit for the company. I then interviewed with the head of support which was fairly straight forward. We talked about my experience and why I wanted to work for the company. There were a few technical questions and more just expectation to make sure you installed and messed around with the Elastic applications prior to the interview. Ultimately, I was rejected after the second interview due to a lack of system administration and DevOps experience. They were very courteous to provide me direct feedback on where my weaknesses were, what they were looking for, and invited me to apply again after gaining experience. Overall, everyone was very friendly and passionate about their work.

Company is primarily remote so it was a total of four phone/video interviews (1 with the recruiter, 1 with the hiring manager, 1 with the hiring manager's boss, and 1 with a peer). Each were about 45 minutes via Zoom video conferencing (phone only for the recruiter). Everyone was nice and punctual. They asked about your background and why you wanted to work for Elastic, specifically. The interviews were easy and more conversational in nature.

Initial interview was with a recruiter, then a technical interview with two engineers. Technical interview involved a live coding session. All the interviews were done over zoom. Because of the distributed nature of the company, finding times that work for everyone means your interview may be at odd hours (very early in the AM, or late at night)

I was impressed by the entire interview process at Elastic. The recruiter, Jason, was very communicative and helpful; he championed me through all of the interviews and assignment. Overall, I was struck by how I felt much less stress with Elastic. Even though the process was thorough and involved 5 interviews, the communication, clarity, and tone of the interviews made me comfortable.

Call with the recruiter and then 4 zoom interviews with manager and adjacent managers. Everyone was very nice, and as another reviewer said, it really was strangely stress free. There were no "gotcha" questions. Each interview felt like everyone really wanted to make sure that I was a good fit for the group. I loved how much attention is paid to how everyone will fit in and get along. That can be overlooked sometimes

Interview questions were typical; background related, and some situational questions. A lot of time was taken to explain the role and expectations therein.

Process was a little long, but I've found most interview processes to be a little drawn out now.

My recruiter was so helpful. He went on vacation right after I accepted the offer but made sure to line me up with someone else to answer any questions I had while waiting on the offer letter.

Fully-remote interview process, mostly via Zoom calls. Multiple technical panels as well as the recruiter. Fairly quick process (once it actually started -- I didn't hear anything for almost two months from the time I was referred). Very sharp interviewers. Competitive offer.

Great to hear you enjoyed the interviews and have decided to join us. Apologies for the long initial wait to be contacted, 2 months certainly is beyond the timeframe we are trying to get back to applicants in. We will continue our work on smoother and quicker feedback and response loops.

The recruiters at Elastic are very responsive. However; I believe they give you false hope. At my first interview the hiring manager told me at the end that she liked the other candidate. I didn’t expect to go to the next interview because of her comment. However, I made it to the second interview and got positive feedback from the recruiter. I then made it to the third interview where the interviewer was working on other things and interviewing me at the same time . She only made eye contact with me once. Because of the hiring managers comment and the third interview I thought I wasn’t going to make it. I probably should have dropped out of the process and went with my gut that it wasn’t going to go anywhere. I also emailed a question to the interviewer and never got a response back. The recruiter made it sound that I was doing very well and even said how can I help you win this interview . I was invited to the final interview which I thought went well. Then I got an email from recruiter saying let’s switch mindset from interviews to offers to on boarding. I felt like I was just going through the HR motions to show them another candidate. I then got a call from the recruiter that said they went with the other candidate. He also mentioned that the other 2 interviewers who I interviewed with weren’t even at the round table to help make the decision. He then said If the first candidate wouldn’t accept the offer then I would be offered the position. I was stringed along the whole time. 👎
I would recommend Elastic cut back on the
interviews and to remember that the candidates are real people.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Clearly we were misaligned between recruiting and the interview team and we can do better. In addition, we have been enhancing our interviewer training since learning of poor experiences like yours and know that we can and should make sure we're putting our best foot forward. We need to represent the real people you'd be working with and model how we treat each other--with respect and empathy. We're so sorry that's not what you experienced and the loss is ours.
