      Entretien pour Wool Trader

      Candidature

J'ai postulé en ligne. Le processus a pris 2 semaines. J'ai passé un entretien chez Modiano (Londres, Angleterre) en mai 2014

      Entretien

I have applied for a position advertised on Guardian Jobs section titled ''Russian Junior Wool Trader''. The position required high Uni grades , ability to speak Russian plus one more European languages. In my case it was Swedish. To possess open, sales oriented personality and great communication skills. I ve been invited for a first interview with 2 Senior Managers in the heart of City of London. The senior managers were around 55 years old and working at Modiano for many years. All of them are family related as the company is family owned , so only junior / secretary positions are filled with 'outsiders'. all manager positions are only for the family. The Senior Managers made it clear for me at the first interview. They were completelly unprepared for the interview and it took for them 5 minutes to re-read in my CV and start asking me, I believe, irrelevant questions as where I was born and how can I afford living in Central London as they could see from my CV that I had a central London postcode. Later one they asked me about my previous work experience and education, I did well on that part so they invited me for a second interview which took place 1 week later. On the second ínterview I' ve met a senior manager (one of the interviewers from the 1st interview) and his brother, who happened to be a CEO of G.Modiano Mimited. They aksed me exactly the same questions about my childhood (irrelevant?), hobbies, whether I play football or whether I have a girlfriend. I believed it was extremelly unappropriate to ask all those personal questions. After having had an interview for almost 3 hours they told me that they will let me know later whether I will get a job, I left a campany with the feeling that if I get a job here I will never be able to grow in my career as I will never ever feel at home. Family owned company is not a work palce for everyone. At their company there is no single female working as there is no person younger than 40 years old. I would not recommend to apply for Modiano G as long as you are female, non-white, gay or ambitious person.

G Modiano Ltd welcomes applications irrespective of gender, colour, nationality, orientation, religion or age. Out of a world-wide staff of about 350 just four are from the Modiano family and the majority of Directors and Senior Managers are not members of the Modiano family. We have a very capable and experienced workforce and we value their commitment to our company. We are proud of the fact that many employees have stayed with us for a long time. Of course that does impact on our age and service profile; nevertheless some 15% of our UK staff are under thirty. Like many family businesses we do pay particular attention to whether a candidate’s personality will fit into our culture. We know that many young people prefer the cut and thrust of a corporate environment so we accept that this environment is not for everyone. As it happens, in this instance, only one of our interviewers was over fifty years old. We were surprised to find these comments on Glassdoor as this candidate had previously said “I’m sure in my mind that the wool trader position at Modiano is exactly the sort of position that I am hoping to pursue and commit fully to”. Even after we had sent our letter of rejection he replied “If there will be any reconsideration in your decision in the future I will gladly be available as I find myself a perfect candidate for the wool trader position in your company”.
