    Entretien de Store Manager

    Candidat à l'entretien anonyme
    Aucune offre d'embauche
    Expérience neutre

    Entretien

I had an initial phone screen to talk about an opportunity with Yeti. I felt the interview/phone screen went well, however I received and email stating I wasn’t selected for an interview. The interesting fact is, I have still seen advertisements for the store management position on a few other websites.

Phone screen with HR, phone screen with hiring manager, then in-person interviews with panels at YETI HQ in Austin. All moved along quite quickly and I never felt out of the loop during any steps.

    Entretien

Terrible interview panel and questions. The interview panel made of IT complained about other management in IT and expected me to align with them. Not really interested in my answer. 2 grumpy folks in the panel was not even sure why they were called and started random questions "how will you reduce work for Jane Doe?" . Pretty much most questions were indirectly towards how I will assist in ganging up against management and business who dont know what they are doing and will ask you to work late. The interview as neither easy nor difficult but rather embarrassing. Long turnaround time each step of the way.

    Entretien de Data Scientist

    Candidat à l'entretien anonyme - Austin, TX (États-Unis)

    Entretien facile

    Candidature

J'ai postulé en ligne. Le processus a pris 1 jour. J'ai passé un entretien à YETI (Austin, TX (États-Unis)) en mars 2019.

    Entretien

I spoke on the phone with an HR recruiter about a Data Scientist role at YETI coolers. This review will mostly be a critique of that phone call.

So, I have a great background and experience for the position they were hiring for and was pretty excited to get to talk to YETI. But this is one of the very few calls with a recruiter in my career that I have not had them indicate they want to move forward and overall I feel like there was something completely wrong with this interview. I don't know if it was bias against me, or her just having a bad day, or what.

Let me explain: She started off by calling me almost 20 minutes late and assured me that she isn't normally late like that. I guess she made a special exception just for me....

Then, the first thing she asked me was why I wanted to work at YETI. This question is usually sort of annoying because I feel the point of interviewing is to find out IF I want to work there and if they want to hire me, but never the less I told her how I use their products, have a relevant skillset and background, and I'm an avid outdoors person and feel like I would really connect with their culture and brand. She responded at length by telling me that not everyone who works there is a hunter or outdoorsman and that their brand is really just about people or some such nonsense. She almost made me feel like I would be an outsider there and never once suggested any different.

Second, she asked me why I was looking to leave my current job as a Data Scientist at eBay. I was very careful to explain that there were good things and bad things about my current job, but since I've been in my current position for over 3 years and see growing further in my current role to be difficult due to organizational dysfunction and general tumult, that it would be a good time to leave. Her immediate follow up was to point out that in data science a lot of people seem to move around more often than 3 years and asked why I didn't leave sooner. Seriously?! Even after I explained that the work at eBay felt meaningful and the problems were engaging to work on and there were often periods where progress was being made in the organization, she responded dismissively by saying "well I admire your loyalty." It was so platitudinous that I figure she wasn't even listening at that point.

She also eventually asked if I had experience in time series and forecasting, which would be fine if she even knew what that stuff is. But I made the mistake of trying to explain my experience instead of just saying "yes." Considering there were long pauses after every answer I gave I assume she was struggling to capture my answers in her notes. My experience with most HR recruiters is if they aren't technically literate in what they are asking, then they should save the question for a follow up tech screen.

When she asked about salary requirements, I told her what my current total compensation is which is pretty well under market according to Glassdoor, Linkedin, and Indeed, but she still insisted on telling me that they probably couldn't compete with my restricted stock compensation which I told her I wasn't even worried about. It just felt like she was jumping on whatever she could to contradict me once again. I even tried to make a small joke about buying some YETI stock myself since they don't give it out as rewards and she was kind enough to give me about 10 seconds of complete radio silence without even a courtesy chuckle or something.

The other thing I remember from this completely awkward interview is asking her about the YETI HQ office location. Once again, I tried to tell her how I liked their choice of being in SW Austin but she was busy going on a long rant about how their office should be downtown like everything else but there are benefits to it being in SW if you don't mind moving somewhere down there. She also pointed out that there are trees and a hiking trail nearby but she was almost silent when I told her that those are things I value and have at my current office and would love to not have to give up if I changed jobs. She couldn't even say "well that's good you would like it here" or something like that.

Finally, she told me she would get back to me by the end of the week and of course after two I haven't heard a peep. Whatever...

The length and depth of this review is mostly for cathartic purposes as I was thrown for a pretty big loop after talking to this recruiter. I doubt it will help anyone, But I guess if she is representative of Yeti as a corporation, then good riddance. I'll find a better job elsewhere.

A phone interview is followed by an in office interview. The phone interview is done by recruitment and doesn't ask technical questions. The office interview is incredibly informative and the staff is friendly. The interviews themselves are done with 2 of the accountants on the team and a separate interview with their boss.
