I’m glad I read Glassdoor reviews when I was starting this interview and negotiation process. I would have been taken completely by surprise if I hadn’t read another post here by someone else who had their offer rescinded. So, writing this review in case it helps the next person.

Athenahealth rescinded my offer for a senior associate position the day after I accepted it. (They rescinded it via a phone call; the recruiter said she would send written confirmation soon.) The recruiter said the offer was rescinded because of changes at the company. They rescinded the offer before asking for references and before contacting me about doing a background check.

Since you can’t always be picky about where you work, this is the advice I’d give to a friend who received an offer from athenahealth: First, negotiate salary. They moved 20% on the offered base salary before my offer was rescinded. Second, have a backup plan. If you’re currently employed, don’t give notice any earlier than you absolutely have to. I can only imagine what a mess I’d be in now if I’d given notice at my job as soon as I accepted the athenahealth offer, only to have athenahealth rescind the offer later.

I’m not a lawyer, but my not-professional research suggests that US job seekers don’t have any legal protections around offers being rescinded. I guess that means it’s up to us to protect ourselves as best we can.

What a waste of seven weeks. I had two phone interviews, one 3 hour in person where I had to pay for my own parking (wasn’t validated), a Skype interview and two thirty minute reference checks.. that were pushed back multiple times (not respectful of my references time at all.) After my in person interview I was told to the keep the recruiter posted about my other interviews so they could potentially speed things up for me. For three weeks in a row, I was told I should know by the end of the week. Seven weeks later and I got a rejection email saying they were going with a candidate that better fit there needs. I have sales, cold calling & closing experience, displayed high levels of empathy and referred to a story of someone I love who has struggled with their health allowing me to better empathize with the patients of the practices they are implementing the technology in to. I am absolutely repulsed by this process and how led on I was. This is business, don’t tell a candidate to keep them posted on other interviews and reference check only to reject them. Have a little more decency than that.

My overall experience: They have been asking the same questions since 1965 which is lame. Even if you code it half way you will be rejected because they want solution and not your approach. The reason is because they don't understand any other programming language expect the one on they work. So my final advice memorize your solution if you get these questions and code it completely on the interview day.

    • Phone Round - Degree of an array - leetcode

      Onsite:
      Round 1: (45 mins)
Technical discussion with Manager who sounded less confident, less techy and not sure about bunch of technologies I spoke about. Overall I felt that he has his own bubble and always stayed in that. Dont know about things going outside his comfort zone.

Round 2: Coding round (Bring your own laptop and code it there itself) - 90 min
You have a clock and 4 pennies, 4 nickel, 4 dimes. You need to find all the combinations of coins so that they can be placed on the clock such that no coin is repeated on the clock. One example is PPDDNNPDDPNN.

Here is the solution in python with problem description:
      https://github.com/atsepkov/puzzles/tree/master/interviews/easy/coins-on-clock
      https://stackoverflow.com/questions/43825638/how-can-you-determine-how-to-place-coins-on-a-clock

I solved this question half of it. My code ran and worked perfectly fine. Then I was out of time so I told them about my approach for the other half.

Round 3 (Behavioral Round): 1 hour with lunch
      Challenges
      Team conflicts
      Proud Project
      and other stupid questions

      Round 4 (Coding Round):
You are given a 3X3 matrix which has 3 colors ballon Red, Blue and Green.
Consider Red - 1, Blue - 2, Green - 3 in the below matrix. In your program you will pass row and col. Whatever value appears in the matrix for that row and column, that value including its 4 neighbours of the same type (up, left, down, right) should be popped. Now imagine as if gravity is pulling your popped matrix down. After its popped you need to replace the popped value with 0 pull the rows of the matrix to the bottom. Example:

      Given matrix:
      3 2 3
      1 3 1
      1 2 2

      int[] popMatrixBallons(int [][] matrix, int row, int col) {
          //your code goes here
      }

Lets say you pass row = 1, col = 0. You got value = 1
      Step 1:
      1. Pop(replace) row 1 and col 0 with value 0. Also replace its 4 neighbours with 0 if there is a 1.
So your resulting matrix will look like this
      3 2 3
      0 3 1
      0 2 2

      Step 2:
Now apply gravity on your matrix:
Because you popped (1,0) and (2,0) so column zero will be pulled by gravity. And number 3(0,0) will be pulled at the bottom of the matrix. So your final answer will be

      0 2 3
      0 3 1
      3 2 2

At first attempt I said I will do it using dfs. My interviewer looked surprised with that word. I then understood he doesn't knows anything about dfs, bfs. Then I said depth first search. After that he gave me some tips and I was able to code it and run my program.

Next morning: REJECTED.   Répondre à cette question

Applied on their website. Recruiter reached out to schedule an online coding challenge on call with a technical staff that lasted 1 hour. athenahealth flew me on site for 5 one-on-one interviews with managers/technical staff. 3 behaviorial (1 of them is during lunch) and 2 technicals. The technical interviews were around 1.5 hours ea and behavioral were 1 hour each. Each technical interview consists of a base problem where you first write out pseudocode then write it up to run (language and environment is all up to you). Then they will add requirements after each success. I personally didnt finish every requirement (got to last req in 1 before we ran out of time) for 1 and gave a sub-optimal answer for second.

The process was more or less fine up until the way they sent me my rejection. Applied, was contacted by someone from HR (who seemed disorganized given that they didn’t finalize my in person interview time until LITERALLY the day before, as if I don’t have to get time off approved) , got the in person interview, met the team, enjoyed my time there. Two weeks of radio silence, I’ve already written off any hope of hearing back. Whatever, time to move on. Then, 13 days after I have my in person interview, I get an email at 10am from the HR rep, asking if we can schedule a quick call. I quickly reply back, getting excited because I’ve only ever received rejections via email, and if you’re job searching, 99% of the time when your potential employer wants to call you, it’s good news. Not this time. They keep me in a state of anticipation and anxiety for 6.5 hours until they finally call, just to deliver the news that although I was a great culture fit and everyone apparently liked me, they’re going in another direction. To me, and to pretty much everyone else I’ve talked to (also reading stories on quora and reddit of similar experiences), this seemed like a low blow and then kicking me into the dirt. My advice to HR is to realize that your job is HUMAN resources- think before you act. Put yourself in the shoes of a job searcher before you give them news- positive or negative. Job searching is depressing. It’s dehumanizing. But you had to go and make it even worse by providing a small modicum of false hope, stretching that out over 6.5 hours, and then bluntly kicking me in the gut. Like I said in my follow up email, I’ve been searching long enough to know that an email is standard and will suffice. What athena did was basically evil.

    Reasonabe delays between interview parts.
Everyone involved was very nice and helpful to all the questions they asked.
They were very accommodating and I didn't feel pressured at an part of the interview.
There were a lot of questions about my resume, and that seemed to be the main focus besides behavioral.

I was first contacted by a member of HR to go over the details of the position and learn more about the company. Then another phone interview was scheduled a few days later with the manager of the department that the position would report to. After a few days they invited me for about an hour and a half of onsite interviews with the Department Manager and various members of the team I would be working with.

I’m living in San Jose, CA and applied to a software engineer position in Athenahealth, which is located in Boston (Watertown), on Jan. 2020. I delivered my resume on their official website on Friday, and then received the interview call on Monday.
    HR Interview:
The first stage took about 30 minutes. HR asked me for some questions according to my resume and introduced Athenahealth in detail.
    Online Assessment:
The day after the first round of interviews, I was notified of the second round of online assessment. I scheduled this quiz the next day. It had only one algorithm problem and used the Hackerrank interface. In addition, there was an engineer working with you. He is very friendly and reminds me that the purpose of this round is to test the basic ability of candidates to do programming. Therefore, the first priority should be to be able to solve the problem rather than the optimal solution.
    Onsite Interview
The day after the second round of interviews, I received the third round of onsite interview notice. Athena offered air tickets between San Jose and Boston and one-night accommodation in Marriott. I arranged an onsite interview next Wednesday.
There are 5 rounds in the onsite interview including 3 rounds for behavior testing and 2 rounds for algorithm programming from 9:15 am to 2:30. The most challenging part was that the 5 rounds of interviews are continuous and include lunch time. Every interviewer is friendly and makes me think the company culture is also very friendly.
    Get the offer
5 days after the on-site interview, I received my offer letter. I think Athena is a good company. Good salary, good environment, and good working culture. The interview process was efficient and respected. I strongly suggest everyone to apply for this company.
