Honestly. It's very fun to talk about books.

You're having the kids read a book with their parents help. You tell the parents that if the kid gets stuck on a word, let them try, but if they don't get it, just tell them the word. The goal is to focus on reading flow. A kid is struggling with a word and you see his mom pressuring him to sound it out. They're both getting frustrated. What do you do?

1 réponses

"Hi Carol. Just a quick reminder: if Billy doesn't get the word, it's okay to just give it to him and move on for now. We want him to practice his flow, okay? Try that and I'll check back in on you guys in a little while." Moins

You see a parent struggling to work with their child while everyone is practicing reading together. What do you say to the parent?

1 réponses

Warm and direct- "I see that your child is getting frustrated with reading this book. I also see that you are waiting too long to step in and give the correct word. When Timmy gets stuck on a word, I want you to simply say the word and let him keep going." Moins

What are you most nervous about regarding teaching?

1 réponses

I told them I was very nervous about classroom management--I wasn't sure how this should be done exactly, especially with the younger students; the IRD gave me the practice and fundamentals in training to be able to manage a classroom smoothly, regardless of grade level, all the way from 4/K through high school. You're reading a book to a class of first-graders, and Little Timmy (just an example, haha) gets up in the middle of reading to sharpen his pencil. What do you do?

1 réponses

"Hey, Little Timmy, we're in the middle of a story right now. I'm gonna need you to wait until we're done so that we're all paying attention to the story." Moins
