If you want your employees to care more about the company, make them a part of the company. Often the recruiters tell contractors they will be converted after a short stint as a contractor and yet most contractors have been working here for years. Also, some sort of training or plan for development needs to be put in place for new hires. Having people start and giving them zero direction is simply unacceptable.
