It all depends which area of the organisation you work. Generally the closer you are to the customer journey the more rewarding the job (that's where the money is budgeted) . If you work in a support function then your life is filled with political top trumps - for the winners there are career jumps, awesome projects and opportunity to influence for the losers or should I say the people who prefer their work to be measured by a more qualitative view and not who they know there is little recognition, pressure and long hours.
Surely you would think that the management and leadership of these support functions would support their team members feeling unrecognised and working long hours however, when working in a remote team some managers have taken the term remote to mean keeping their distance and treat those people as if they are working in a forgotten realm perhaps an episode of Lost. An arm round the shoulder is a thumbs up on web conferencing...in fact web conferencing needs a whole paragraph of it own.
With the introduction of web conferencing the benefit was that team travel was cancelled and replaced with hours upon hours of conferencing meaning of course that you could have multiple conversations about multiple projects on multiple calls and not have any time left in the day to actually do your work...
Hook (Head office) is the centre of the support function universe and so working environments differ depending on your location - now that may sound like..so what? Well in Hook there is the option of Starbucks or Costa coffee and professional chefs and in Gateshead there is an unreliable Costa coffee machine, a limited supply of sandwich fillings and over cooked jacket potatoes the size of golf balls if you get there quick enough.
