Job Title

Service Reliability Engineerfor Data StoreS Division

Business Environment

The DSS division (Data StoreS) has been created to gather the SQL and NoSQL data stores related activities in the same entity. SQL and NSQ (NoSQL) are the two departments belonging to DSS structure.

While NSQ is in charge of the NoSQL data stores (Couchbase, MongoDB, Redis, ElasticSearch), SQL is dealing with the relational DB with main focus on Oracle, MariaDB, and SQL Server.

With the concept of DBaaS, DataBase as a Service, we aim at providing the right database solution for the right usage to our customers.

Among the activities handled by the teams, we can list:

  • Provide support and expertise to our Business Units.

  • Provide guidance on which technology is best for a specific use case.

  • Provide and operate SQL solutions both in private and public clouds (e.g. Azure, Amazon).

  • Automate, in a serviceable way, all operations around data store operation including deploying, patching, monitoring and upgrading of the concerned data stores.

  • Develop the libraries and components enabling our customers to connect and use to those data stores in a way compliant with Amadeus requirements such as logging, monitoring, security, alerting…

The SQL stores are used by almost all application within Amadeus and therefore it is key to ensure the highest possible quality for our deliveries and operations.

Within the SQL department, the RDP, RDT and RDS teams have the responsibility of the capacity planning, the deployment, the maintenance, the security patching, the incident management and the execution of the massive upgrade campaigns of the SQL databases (Oracle, MariaDB and MSSQL), including their operating systems (Linux and Windows Server) and their machines (bare metal and virtual machines). In this context, the RDB team is the development team that deals specifically with:

  • Design, validate and document the SQL database stacks for Oracle, MariaDB and MSSQL

  • Develop the automation to provide the above stacks as a service

  • Include other teams' members in the design and the coding

  • Communicate the changes in the department

  • Manage the cloud environments where the databases are deployed

  • Improve the quality and the security above the standards

  • Develop custom components for Amadeus specific needs, like:

    • Monitoring components for the datastores

    • Middleware libraries for application developers

    • DBaaS APIs to consume our services

    • Tools that improve the developer experience

The RDB team opens a position for an SRE person with senior experience with MariaDB administration on Linux OS and Ansible automation development.

Summary of the role:

The SRE will actively interface with software developers, network engineers, systems, storage, project management and database administrators on projects and providing second tier on call support will be required.

  • Participate in the design and building of tools and processes to support the infrastructure. Leverage scripting to build required automation and tools on an ad-hoc basis.

  • Operate and design the platform within our security and privacy guidelines.

  • Learn on the job and explore new technologies with no supervision and mentor and train the rest of the team on these technologies.

  • Ability to use and train/mentor other team members on a wide variety of open source technologies and tools.

  • Experience with systems and IT operations.

  • A strong focus on business outcomes.

  • Troubleshoot issues across the entire stack - hardware, software, application, and network and mentor/train the rest of the team.

  • Document current and future configuration processes and policies.

  • Proactive thought leadership for creative and efficient technology solutions.

Check out Tavleen’s testimony: “I started as a software developer in Amadeus Nice. In 2013, I was ready for my next opportunity at Miami in the new world of Operations. By 2015 I was now backpacking to take the next challenge: lead a development team of Operational in another location: Munich, Germany. This role got me the opportunity to lead and build high performance agile teams, to improve my capacity in drinking “weissbier” & to speak another language. I did fairly good in all except the last one!
