Avantages

Per diem educational consultant roles offer great flexibility and would be great for someone who is retired or looking to pick up a side gig after leaving classroom teaching.

Inconvénients

Curriculum Associates is a for-profit company which preys on former educators’ desire to help students. Their mission-driven language masks a profit-first model that relies on former teachers’ willingness to give extra time, energy, and especially unpaid labor in ways that feel uncomfortably similar to the exploitation many experienced in education itself. For educators considering this as a transition out of the classroom, it is important to understand that reality clearly before accepting the role. As reflected in other recent reviews, compensation for the part-time Professional Learning team was significantly reduced, leaving many employees with gig-level pay while still facing expectations that often resemble—or exceed—full-time professional demands. The work frequently involves extensive travel, cross-time-zone scheduling, and collaboration across multiple departments. While these experiences can be professionally rewarding, part-time staff are often treated as though they have the same availability as salaried employees, despite being compensated only for select portions of their time. Meetings and responsibilities are regularly scheduled on unpaid days, with limited recognition that many employees rely on supplemental work, caregiving flexibility, or intentionally chose part-time roles for work-life balance. The result is a role that functions as serious sales and customer retention support, but is increasingly compensated like a side job. Additionally, prospective employees should carefully evaluate the advertised hourly rate, as it can be misleading. The posted rate generally applies only to customer-facing hours, which represent just one portion of the job’s actual responsibilities. Many essential duties—including planning, internal meetings, travel, and administrative responsibilities—may be unpaid or compensated at substantially lower rates, significantly reducing true earnings. Combined with seasonal fluctuations, inconsistent workloads, and the unpredictability of school-based scheduling, income can be highly unstable and difficult to control. Even performance incentives may feel disconnected from actual effort or effectiveness, as bonus structures are often tied more to assigned work volume than employee performance, leaving workers with limited agency over their earning potential.

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. We appreciate you highlighting the flexibility of the per diem Educational Consultant role, and we also hear the concerns you raised around compensation, scheduling expectations, workload, and work-life balance for part-time team members. CA's Educational Consultants play a key role in partnering with educators and ensuring our work has meaningful impact in classrooms, and we deeply value the expertise and commitment they bring. We know it’s important that employees feel their time, expertise, and contributions are respected and supported. We’re continuing to evaluate how we support part-time employees and create more sustainable ways of working as the needs of schools and teams evolve. We appreciate you sharing your perspective, and we’ll be reflecting this feedback back to leadership as part of those ongoing conversations. Avantages

Before working at Curriculum Associates, I was an elementary teacher using i-Ready in my classroom for both reading and math. It was such an important resource to me... so much so that I actually remember Googling "how to work for i-Ready" because I wanted to learn more about the company behind it! That eventually led me to the EdTech Fellowship, which gave me the chance to see the corporate side of education after only really knowing the classroom side. I really enjoyed the fellowship and knew pretty quickly that I wanted to stay at CA if there was ever an opportunity. I’ve now been here for almost two years and have had the unique experience of being in the fellowship, a temporary role, and now a full-time role. I’ve truly had a great experience in each stage and have felt supported as I’ve continued to grow and learn. One thing I really appreciate about CA is how mission-aligned people are. As someone who has been both a teacher using the product and now an employee working behind the scenes, I can say that people here care about supporting teachers and students. That shared purpose makes the work feel meaningful and makes it easy to feel connected to the people around you!!

Inconvénients

The transition from teaching into the corporate world can come with a learning curve (which I think the Ed Tech Fellowship really helped with!)

Thank you so much for sharing this. It’s especially meaningful to hear from someone who first experienced i-Ready in the classroom and later joined the team through the EdTech Fellowship. We’re so glad to hear you’ve felt supported throughout each stage of your journey at Curriculum Associates. Knowing that the mission and care for teachers and students has felt genuine both inside and outside the classroom means a lot to us. We also appreciate you mentioning the transition from teaching into the corporate world. That shift can definitely come with a learning curve, and we’re glad the fellowship helped make it feel more approachable. Thank you again for sharing your experience and for being part of the team!

The company started so strong and attracted high level educational professionals! The people I work with in the field are top notch.

Inconvénients

Morale is so low now, a 20% pay cut does that. Those of yall applying for the newly posted Educational Consultant position, just know that you're being brought in to replace a highly professional team that has slowly exited in the last month due to pay cuts, extremely micromanaging managers, leadership that DOES NOT LISTEN to its people with actual action, and heightened expectations for productivity, AI usage and outsourcing quality. If you're cool with that environment, welcome aboard. The recent lawsuit doesn't make them look good either, curious about their future.
