Avantages

Benefits are good, opportunity to learn from bright minds when working alongside them. Work/Life balance is very stable depending on the work you're involved in. Folks are generally friendly and nice to chat with.

Inconvénients

Lack of available work recently due to politics, you'll need to scrounge and ask multiple people just to find something to work on. Even then, you'll have to do a mini-interview again to prove you're a good fit for a project. Upper management does not have your back.

Avantages

Best for senior managers only

Inconvénients

Can get immensely political and toxic in some division (Earth science modeling/Atmospheric sciences in this case). Not conducive for early career, unless you join a senior scientist's tribe. Beware of questionable behavior and practices from few staff scientists (co-opting of work and gaslighting of postdocs/student interns, just to amass publications as corresponding author). This case is specific to an atmospheric modeling staff scientist protected by such tribalism despite cases amassed against them. Nepotism is also prevalent again earth/atmospheric sciences. How is it acceptable or possible for someone with such track record of behavioral issues with early-career, get protection and enabling by peers despite that (maybe just because of hitting some metrics and maybe getting a nature comm paper early on in their career). Definitely then didn't learn the trait of nurturing their mentees and postdocs like they have been protected! Not an ethical standard to allow scientists have their own offspring as intern! Work life balance can be hampered severely if you get a bad actor as a PI/Manager.
