Avantages

The people in the main office in The Hague are very friendly and make a nice place to work. They usually help each other and care about one another. The office atmosphere is warm and friendly, so it is easy to fit in and feel like part of the team. Salary ranges are competitive for an international NGO.

Inconvénients

Limited opportunities and the management team's disinterest in career growth have left many colleagues stuck in dead-end positions. Performance review cycles are ignored as no stakes are involved. The organization operates without a focus on performance/KPIS, lacks basic 21st century digital tools (report expenses, book a desk), and offers minimal space for employee-driven initiatives or upward feedback. Most (NL) teams suffer from a considerable skills gap, departments are filled with generalists and only a few specialists. Hiring decisions are often made based on NGO or global-south experience instead of the skills needed for the function. SNV is characterized by unclear structure and direction, countries, the executive team, projects, and sector leaders pulling for influence, reducing our direction and goals to PowerPoint presentations and a few nice words on our global meetings.

Avantages

The founder and former executive director of SNV USA, Neil Ghosh, grew the organization to $50M in backlog in less than 10 years. I respected that he knew when to take the lead and when to follow. The overwhelming majority staff were great and worked incredibly hard to make the organization what it is.

Inconvénients

Staff is incredibly overworked. There are few processes, procedures, and templates in place to facilitate work flow. The new exec dir has expressed a lack of interest in establishing such systems. She seems more focused on trying to enhance her own image rather than building on the legacy of what has been established.
