J'ai travaillé chez Public Health England en Contrat Permanent (Pendant plus de 3 ans)

    Avantages

Friendly, professional, and a great place to learn new knowledge and skills. Evidence based practice used at all times. I learnt a lot.

    Inconvénients

The commute was not good at all for me. Also being on call and still having to work the next day even if you were woken during the night, not at all appreciated by my family.

    Conseils à la direction

Look at the on call system. Surely the consultants could do a bit more of the on call work, instead of everything having to be done by 1st on call. I sometimes worked 8 hours a day on Sat and Sundays whilst the consultant did nothing at all. ( well it depended who was on call with you) You could get very tired. No days off in lieu and then back to work on Monday was not really a healthy work life balance.

Je travaille chez Public Health England à plein temps

    Avantages

The job is interesting and I have a diverse workload that covers statistics, analytical skills, project management and data science. I'm never bored - it's project work at speed, so prepare to push your skills to the limit.
I'm constantly learning new skills (Advanced statistics, R, SQL, Python, Arc GIS , GitHub, JIRA, Confluence etc). There are large teams with diverse age and cultural profiles, although it's still white middle class the further north you go. Friendly colleagues from an array of backgrounds with differing skill sets. There's lots of promotion potential, a young organisation that's still filling vacancies.

    Inconvénients

No pay rise, what you start on, you stay on... Hierarchy issues - Some people who are two grades up generally don't email you back or pick up the phone. So you have to get your manager to speak with that manager (time passing, hours wasted, money down the drain). Finally they come back with an answer that bears no resemblance to what you asked, causing communication issues. Still very white male middle class management. PHE would benefit from having some order (it's generally chaotic at an organisational level) and we would benefit from having 'Standard Operating Procedures'; project planning and strong leadership. At the moment everybody seems to come at tasks with a multitude of approaches and there is little consistency in methodology or approach. Turnover is very high - Everyday I seem to contribute to a leaving present and card... Matrix working and hot desking - not a fan. Clinical cubicle style desks where you can't have a plant, picture etc, prepare to be 'dehumanized'.

    Conseils à la direction

Have a plan, and objectives which are embedded within an overall organisational project management strategy. Then make sure your managers are doing what they should be doing, rather than the endless meetings to say why a thing can't be done and the endless blame game. Shake up management and employ people so we have a more representative and diverse upper structure.
