J'ai travaillé chez RockAuto à temps plein plus d'un an

    Avantages

    1. The profit-sharing bonuses. If the owner stopped issuing these, all his employees would quit immediately. There is nothing else keeping people at Rockauto. It took me two years to learn that money is not worth the misery, depression, and anxiety all RockAuto employees experience. 2. I will never ever be able to say I had a ‘bad day’ at work again at any other job for the rest of my life. No matter what... happens in any other position, I will always respond that I’ve had a great day, because I have this crazy place to compare it to. #Blessed

    Inconvénients

    1. All employees live in constant fear of being fired or demoted, as this is a regular occurrence. There were at least 25+ people fired or demoted out of a company with less than 80 employees within the 2 years I was there. I only saw 1 person get a promotion. 2. EXTREME micro-management from the owner of the company. He has no social skills and does not hesitate to belittle, yell, and scold employees in front... of the entire organization (thanks to the 'open office' environment!) 3. There are constantly changing expectations. What you are praised for one week, you will be condemned for the next week. 4. Employees are not treated like responsible working adults. It is like you are a teenager again clocking in and out of a job, forced to take PTO if you take 5 minutes longer on your lunch break, and then forced to stay late and work overtime that same day. It makes no sense. There is no trust in employees to manage their time and performance. 5. Supposedly you are measured on performance through metrics, but in reality you are measured on how the owners feels about you in a given moment of time. Being a young attractive woman helps you do well. 6. There is no HR department to address #5. 7. The job title of ‘Supply Chain Manager’ is not accurate for expectations in the industry and will not assist in career advancement when you inevitably work somewhere else after. You career will be at a stalemate while you are employed here. 8. There is a scramble to not be on the 'bottom'. This encourages employees to hope for other's failures in order to keep the spotlight off themselves. It is an 'every person for themselves' environment. 9. This company has been sued in the past for ageism and prejudice. Fortunately, they have deep pockets to settle all their legal issues. Do not put yourself in a position where you have to deal with this. 10. The way Rockauto treats their customers is almost as appalling as they way they treat their employees. I won't even get into that or I'll probably exceed the word limit here...

    Conseils à la direction

The owner needs to hire someone else to manage his company before he runs it into the ground. He may have created a successful business model in the e-commerce industry, but he has no clue how to manage employees and his website is now extremely outdated in a modern world. Unfortunately, he has such micro-management and trust issues, he would never allow anyone else to take the reins from him. I do not anticipate... there will ever be positive changes. I have stayed in touch with many former co-workers over the last year and it has only gotten worse since I left.

    Avantages

    Above average pay. No cubicles.

    Inconvénients

Please do not let the (slightly) above average pay for this position fool you into taking a job with RockAuto like I did. I graduated from a major university in supply chain management so I expected I would use that knowledge as a supply chain manager with RockAuto. Man was I wrong. Much of your day as a SCM is spent in a customer service role- arguing over the phone with angry customers who have been raked over the... coals by RockAuto's terrible return policies and unwillingness to even try to accommodate the customer's needs. You will be degraded and cussed out by customers all day long. At RockAuto, the customer is always wrong and as an SCM it's your job to convince them of that. The company also uses key performance indicators that they have made up. Luckily, I was able to barely reach their KPI standards within the first few months of working there, however I know several others who were fired because they failed to meet them. Aside from that component, expect to be degraded and micromanaged by upper management as well. The CEO and others have no issue with yelling (literally yelling) at employees across the open floor plan of the office and berating them for everyone else to hear. If you use the bathroom more than once before noon, expect a nasty email from your manager. The office environment is stale and nobody hardly says hello to one another. I am someone who always needs a plan in place before I move on from something, but the environment at RockAuto was so toxic that I quit without knowing where I would be next and it was the best decision I ever made. My advice- steer clear! This job is NOT worth it at all.

Treat your employees like humans. Let supply chain managers focus on supply chain tasks rather than customer service. We didn't work our butts off in college to sit on the phone with customers and get sworn at all day because of your poor company policies.

    Avantages

    - The dress code is casual

    Inconvénients

    - The job has a huge component of customer service that is constantly at odds with the horrific service policies that are in place, meaning you will constantly be defending these policies to customers who are (justifiably) angry with Rockauto - They dangle huge bonuses for employees that meet KPI's, but those KPI's are achieved arbitrarily and create an environment where there is little job security. In fact, I... think management uses the compensation scheme to justify treating employees they way they do. - Tons of turnover, while I worked there they demoted or fired probably over two dozen people - The people who survive at this company are the ones who agree with or can tolerate the toxic culture and backwards company policies, which naturally results in the leadership positions being filled with people who parrot and enforce the toxic behavior and culture that the CEO promotes

    Conseils à la direction

Please stop making a show of berating employees in front of their co-workers. Also, make your customer service policies more fair and humane so that customer service reps don't spend 8 hours a day getting shouted at by angry customers and mechanics.

J'ai travaillé chez RockAuto à temps plein plus de 5 ans

    Avantages

You'll learn a lot, if you can make it a year or longer you're going to make a lot of money. You get to play with analytics to push forth initiatives. Your coworkers are going to be all be high producing as they are also financially motivated.

    Inconvénients

You can go from top of the heap in performance to getting demoted within a month. You always feel like you're one bad month from being demoted/fired. The KPI system encourages people to try to cheat the system, and its hard to compete while playing the game fairly. Your job scope will often creep, as is the nature of a small company. Also the owner does not understand how to motivate people outside of money. He... will not think twice about yelling at you in front of all your coworkers in an open office environment. He will arbitrarily demote people based on no clear measurable metric. He's a smart person in terms of what he does and how his company works but he is a terrible boss.

    Dérouler

    Conseils à la direction

Jim needs to step down to an advisory role, and stop trying to manage his employees directly. Employees need to understand how they are being evaluated as the KPIs are not the true method of evaluation. A kind word here and there would have gone a long long way. Performance metrics need to be made clearer.

    Avantages

RockAuto offers generous pay and quarterly bonuses in an attempt to compensate for everything else they are lacking as an employer...oh and no dress code is nice.

    Inconvénients

The biggest problem with RockAuto stems from the CEO, operations manager, and the business model of the company. RockAuto is essentially just an overrated middle man for auto parts. They don’t own any parts or warehouses so they have minimal control over the supply chain process - although they like to think they do. Employees are not required to have any significant knowledge of their products so they are not of... any help to customers with ordering. All this company really offers is a mediocre website for customers to place orders through at prices slightly lower than competition. The website is full of errors and vague information which makes it difficult for customers to know what they need. Furthermore, RockAuto offers virtually NO CUSTOMER SEVICE for when customers have questions or problems. Everything is handled through the website. Even when customers email, they will often get quick, template oriented responses which aren’t of much assistance. RockAuto actually started a policy where employees are instructed to lie to customers and say they are “receptionists” in order to avoid helping them over the phone. From a customer’s standpoint, it’s really a gamble if they even should risk the potential problems that could arise with a company like this to save a little money. (It is comparable to ordering prescription drugs from an online pharmacy in another country.) Employees recognize the ridiculousness of these policies but are forced to abide by them because their job literally depends on it. Ironically, RockAuto evaluates employees on standards that are suppose to measure an employee’s ability to help customers when the company is actively trying to “help”customers less and less every day! They stress productivity which essentially means they want you to get through as many calls/emails as possible rather than offering customers any real assistance. The main standards they use - “Sales” and “First Call Resolution” are arbitrary and unclear but employees are forced to abide by them. They display graphs publicly in the company’s system that rank employees from highest to lowest in each of these categories. This basically encourages a hostile environment where employees are competing everyday - and not in a healthy way. The office layout is totally open (no walls or cubicles) and employees can see and hear everything. This further exacerbates the toxic environment and allows employees to witness the effects of not living up to RockAuto standards first hand. It is not unusual for an employee to be publicly reprimanded and embarrassed. RockAuto measures sales through an obscure formula that gives credit for a sale to the last person who made contact with a customer through phone or email before ordering. However, when they are literally telling you not to help customers over the phone and only minimally through email, it starts to seem ridiculous that they are expecting you to “sell” anything. The formula for this metric is also further modified for specific individuals by management depending on how much “customer service” they are actually doing - another arbitrary measurement. Needless to say it is unfair and ineffective. The second metric - “FCR” measures the number of touches to an order as a percentage to all orders touched. RockAuto expects that any order problem can/should be addressed in the first contact or “touch.” So basically, if a customer has an issue, an employee is suppose to address it, find a solution, note the order and have no follow up. This seems reasonable until you account for the fact that customers often contact RockAuto numerous times for various concerns or simply just to complain/argue about the lack of customer service they are receiving. This proves this metric to be just as flawed and ineffective as the others. There is a four month probationary period in which employees are required to meet these standards for two consecutive months in order for employment to continue. RockAuto has terminated several talented employees because of this although they might not tell you this in an interview to avoid scaring you away. It has also caused many others to willingly leave because of how ridiculous and stressful it is. If employees try to “cheat” the metrics in some way (which many do) they can also be reprimanded or fired for this as well. The only ones who are “exempt” from these standards are the management or team leads. It is unclear why or how some of these individuals got to be in these positions but it seems to be favoritism from the CEO. Upon interacting with them, it is obvious some do not have the skills or qualifications necessary for managing employees. A lot of them use harassment tactics to build motivation and some just want to exert dominance. Management will send out harsh emails anytime you make even the smallest mistake. Anything you do well will be minimized or overlooked, but you will constantly be hearing about things you did wrong. Employees are deterred from asking questions because everything is supposedly in the company’s wiki pages. Regardless of if your question was valid or if your manager actually knows the answer to your question, you will be treated as if you are stupid for asking it. Managers are promoted into these positions for the same subjective reasons many employees have been fired. The company seems to value fakeness and corruptness over good, genuine, talented people - which makes sense when you realize the type of company this really is. There is also no formal HR department to report any concerns with coworkers or management so they often go unresolved. The only way to formally report something is through an anonymous peer review system. It will then get looked at in a quarterly review in which it may or may not get addressed properly. Overall there isn’t much positive to say about this company. RockAuto is essentially glorified slave labor. There is an opportunity to make a lot of money, however, you will have to succumb to their ludicrous policies and quite literally be miserable doing it. This is not a career or anything remotely close to it. Do some research and know what you are getting into before you even consider working at RockAuto (or shopping with them for that matter).

    Inconvénients

Management is widely variable in skills talents and ability. Stressful environment. Stressful personalities in key power positions. Demotions are a thing at all levels. Anti-collaborative environment since you are measured against one another. High turnover. Metrics drive the wrong behavior. Website has a horrible layout. It looks like it's from the 90s. It erodes confidence in the remaining employees. Work like a team or hire better. Use everyone's skills to the best of their abilities. Pay for technology. Your employees aren't ever going to be able to use dated... technology at other companies. Also, it might be worth it to drive other innovations. Get a UX/UI designer. Get someone to run analysis and do a/b testing to improve the website.

Money. Lots of it but it varies wildly each quarter. You won't get a bonus for at least 6 months but once you do it's going to be beautiful you're gonna love it. Have fun trying to get time off to enjoy it.

    Inconvénients

12 weeks off is advertised but their turnover rate is only matched at the White House. Therefore they can't afford to approve more than 2 weeks. Management is young and inexperienced which results in close micro management by the CEO who has a long standing history of banging his little fists on the table like a hungry baby. They offer good health insurance which you're going to need for elevated blood pressure and... anxiety. You won't have a chance to defend yourself in their weekly meetings. CEO automatically assumes you're a waste of space until proven otherwise, yells at you in front of the whole office. It's unprofessional and disrespectful. Your manager will either act as a punching bag for you or will throw you under the bus. They actually had "mandatory overtime" or would say "no one goes home until emails are down to zero". A lot of back stabbing occurs in anonymous reviews. Relationships with suppliers and customers has never been good and continues to get worse. You'll be promised data analysis yet spend more of your time getting yelled at by customers who order the wrong Cadillac Converter. This is at best a job rather than a career because your goal is to automate your own job.
