Avantages
Usually fixed schedule, as often work evening shifts. Staff food is available for free, although at times it’s really bad and just chips. Big team with a lot of departments, so technically progression or transfer is possible if your face fits.
Inconvénients
Contracts are very dodgy and do not mention clearly that they are in fact “zero hours”. Company, pretty much reserves the right to cut hours as it sees fit, often times at the very last minute when staff is in a middle of their commute to work. It happened to me very frequently for several months, and no compensation was given for travel costs and cancelled shifts. Hourly staff often get their hours cut and salaried managers are forced to work unpaid overtime instead. Pay is very low, though it can indicate 30k in the contract, the actual net pay is paid by the hour, which is £10 ph - horrible, plus service charge (tronc - maximum I have ever gotten - £200, often times it’s nothing or £100) No external troncmaster. Management controls all tips and tronc, and manipulate it as they see fit, which is unethical. For example, paying managers salaries particularly from tronc. There is no other explanation why staff receive very low tips even during busy months. Culture of fear especially for lower and middle managers as they have to constantly deal with pressure from CEO and higher ups visiting their restaurant. Depending on department, there is a possibility of gossip and backstabbing if you don’t have a strong relationships with people that vouch for you.
