A friend of mine told me about BHP, Inc, a company with headquarters in downtown brooklyn. I wasnt sure if they were a staffing agency or what, so I called, The person that answered the phone was so pleasant. She spoke to me like I was was more important that anything going on in the office. I forget her name but I know it starts with an N. She told me that BHP, Inc was a community organization. One of the services they provide is staffing and recruitment. We went through my resume. She told me about some things I needed to adjust before I could be scheduled for an interview. The following day which was September 3,2010 I met with Natasha. She gave me the application, asked me to fill it out in the lounge area and interviewed me in my office. The office space was really nice and relaxing. The only thing I didnt like was the offices next door were so quiet, I thought I was disturbing everyone when I started talking. Anyway, we went over my resume and made copies of all my original documents. She had me sign a terms and agreeements page. We went though the orientation manual and a powerpoint slide . The powerpoint slide was a skill building workshop reviewing boundary issues and how to respond in certain scenarios. The whole interview and training process took about two hours.
After the interview I received a call aroung 4:30pm the same day. I was scheduled for an interview on Wednesday September 8,2010 for a treatment program who was looking for an MSW. Im only obligasted to work with BHP, Inc for three months before I can get hired through the new organizaition. At first I was upset that it would be a while before I could get a permanent job. But I though about it and reqlized that I have been out of work for a year and have gone on about ten interviews. No one has called me back. They want me to have an LMSW.
My unemployment benefits are running out in November 2010 so I need something now. The one thing that will help is that BHP, Inc gives you ten days worth of metrocards until you receive your first paycheck. They tell you that you have to pay it back with your first check, but it doesnt really matter, because I dont have it to spend upfront.
Overall Ive had a positive experience. I will update this blog in a few days to let everyone know if i got the job.
