A one-hour google hangouts interview. Very friendly, very casual, very amicable. The second filter consisted of working on a project for the project manager. I did not make the third round, but the feedback was very insightful.

The process overall was quite messy. A lot of this can probably be attributed to the fact that the company is very young, but other things were simply not good. One of the interviewers made it very clear he hadn’t even read my CV and told me he didn’t know what my current job is or what I do. The whole thing was unnecessarily long and not very transparent or mindful of candidates time. It seems they were looking for someone with direct experience of this role which is something they could have said in the job description or the screening process. Other processes I have been through with more established companies have been quick, decisive and far more professional. Questions were probably not the best for really getting to know a candidates strengths or transferable skills and I wasn’t asked any competency-based questions. Too much time spent on personal ‘getting to know you’ type questions, but these weren’t natural questions that inspired any interesting or organic conversation. It does seem like everyone who does work here feels very positively about their work environment. However, spending so much time on cultural fit and seemingly trying to ensure that everyone fits the same mould does not usually make for a very diverse workforce. Every person who interviewed me in a senior position was male and of similar ages and backgrounds. It’s so important for companies to remember that the candidate is also interviewing them. Although there were a couple of people I enjoyed speaking to, I was so put off by this process and made to feel so uneasy in some of the interviews that I wasn’t convinced I would take the job if I would have been offered it.

All the best in your job hunt, Team Butternut
