      Entretien

First an HR alignment interview, then a cultural interview then a team member/leader interview. Interviews were personal and professional. The team was very curious and interested in what your background and experience is.

I had an interview with this company’s CEO a few years back that still haunts me. I was asked a few technical questions about the position I was applying for, but then the CEO began asking what I still believe are very inappropriate, probing questions. I distinctly remember being asked “If you had to steal a loaf of bread to survive, would you?” Then I was asked a question that I see other interviewees here on Glassdoor have had to answer: “What is the most negative experience of your life and how did you deal with it?” I answered this question truthfully, which was upsetting in the moment and would be for anyone who had to answer with deeply personal life challenges that, in my case, not many close friends even know. In response, the CEO told me his opinion of my character based on that experience, which was a negative opinion. At this point in the interview, I began to cry against my own will and told him I was no longer comfortable carrying on with the interview. (This goes without saying, but no interview should ever get to this point. It’s unethical and cannot be justified by a quest for authenticity.) Later the CEO emailed me and gave a lukewarm apology, but I wish every day that I had complained formally about it and worked to keep others from having the same experience. As a young professional, this interview was traumatic, and I felt forced to answer questions I wasn’t comfortable with because I was the interviewee. Maybe the CEO learned that this is a terrible way to treat people who are already in a vulnerable position. Maybe he hasn’t. I’ve heard similar stories from several peers and friends. If you interview here, just be aware that you may be subjected to the same sort of unprofessional experience.

What was your worst life experience and how did it make you a better person? (Something like that.)

First, we are very sad that the interview had such a negative impact on you. Given the nature of our intensity around guarding our front door, we recognize the process is sometimes uncomfortable, but we do not want anyone to be in a position where they feel trapped or unsafe. On the contrary, we are committed to maintain a culture of freedom and curiosity. We are free to be curious, and interviewees are free to decline to answer or answer in as limited a way as they choose. We believe that all people are powerful because they have the ability to choose. We have no problem with scrutiny of our process, as we are open-handed and set expectations ahead of time that interviewees are free to choose how they will engage. Our interview model is similar to other high performing cultures in that we seek to understand the fundamentals of the person, not just their skills and capabilities. Thank you for your feedback. We value criticism very highly. And we wish you all the best.

The interview process was fairly typical and moved quickly. However the final interview with the CEO was very strange and happened in a non-professional environment. It is known as "The Walk" and it is the most introspective I have ever been forced to be in a job interview. However the interview itself was ruined by some highly inappropriate questions which I'm pretty sure are not supposed to be asked. When speaking with others, both successful and unsuccessful candidates, it seems this is a common practice.

We stand behind all of the questions we ask in the final interview and consider none of them inappropriate. They're tough, and intended to get past the superficial answers commonly given in interviews to really understand who each candidate is and the positive and negative they bring to the team (because every candidate brings both). It's our last opportunity before putting both candidate and existing team at risk by engaging in an employment relationship, and we take that gatekeeping responsibility very seriously. It is a protective process both for our existing team and for the candidate.
