Initial phone screen with someone from HR that went well and where she was clearly excited to pass me onto the hiring manager, sensing a good fit. Next was a video call with one of the COO, who would be making this first product hire. Despite having a reasonably impressive background and resume, it appeared as if he had no idea how to conduct an interview. He didn't seem to have bothered to review my experience prior to the call and effectively only asked one question "What did you learn at job X", which is a question so open-ended as to be almost useless. He very clearly didn't like my answers but was unable to articulate what he was actually asking for so kept repeating, "but what did you learn at job X?". It was apparent we were talking past each other but I have no idea what sort of answers he was actually looking for, as I gave very detailed answers across several roles. He gave me some time to ask questions of my own but then cut me off at 45 minutes, despite the interview being scheduled for an hour. He did a bad job of hiding that he just wanted to get off the call. It felt pretty unprofessional. He told me the HR rep would be in touch, but no one ever bothered to follow up again. A peculiar experience.
