Initial phone contact with HR, and in-person interview with Hiring Manager at a casual restaurant in a mall (which was awkward and unusual). This carrier is looking to enter the state and get established. With many years of prior experience in calling on and visiting agents I asked specifically what the strategy/approach would be to “stand out” and differentiate themselves from other carriers in a crowded market, and entice agents to be appointed and place business when they have many other mouths to feed. The only answer the hiring manager gave was they would help lower the experience mods for insureds. That’s it. All work comp carriers will say they can do this. I was expecting the hiring manager to say something more dramatic that would separate them from other carriers such as offering higher commissions, ultra low rates, etc. But no, nothing like that at all. Very strange... This carrier apparently doesn’t feel they need to do much to help out whoever they hire for this position. They are just looking to hire someone who can promise they will bring over a large number of agents and a large book of business immediately. Unless you are willing to make lofty promises don’t expect an offer. And if you do make lofty promises you better hope they come true or I don’t see anyone lasting more than a year or two with this company. I recommend avoiding this company unless you want to be looking for another job before long.

HR in Home Office was not communicating with Branch Office Manager and the interview was cancelled three times and re-scheduled three times. Each time this happened the HR person did not seem to have access to the calendar for the Branch Manager and this all came out when I finally got to the interview and I was very frustrated by this communications breakdown.

Question 1
You have not worked on the carrier side for many years so can you transition from agency/brokerage marketing and underwriting to carrier side marketing/underwriting?
