IU HR should establish better campus-wide standards and accountability for hiring managers. I interviewed for a position at the museum over Zoom and in-person. Everyone I met was pleasant and the questions/ issues raised were solid. However, there were many problems with organization and communication during the search: silence and weeks-long delay in scheduling after being asked for a campus visit, to the point I thought I had been ghosted; poorly organized and last-minute travel plans; numerous staff members did not show up for the scheduled interviews or were late; I wasn’t told I needed to do a presentation until I was already in the interview and thus hadn’t reviewed the ppt and didn’t have my notes; I could go on. And then after all this effort, time off from work, and significant travel during covid, I received an automated, impersonal rejection from HR. Considering the small size of the field, this behavior is not just rude but also short-sighted. If this experience reflects how hiring is being handled campus-wide in the current job market, it’s no wonder the university is having staffing issues.
