Recruiter reached out to me via LinkedIn. I submitted my resume to his email. After two weeks I had heard nothing back, so I followed up via LinkedIn and email. A week after following up I received an "assessment" via email from Madison Reed. As soon as I saw the assessment I knew what was happening. It's a program that asks you to answer some questions about yourself, "do you value creativity in your personal time?" "Will you work into the night on projects if you aren't finished" etc.? You're left with three options: 1) Pick the answers that truly define you and hope for the best. 2) Pick answers that represent you, but throw in the ones that you don't love, but would do them because you're a good employee. 3) Lie. Pick only the answers that say you would love to work overtime every night and every other question that implies you would do whatever they asked like a kicked puppy and say thank you. I went with option 2. Apparently choosing even a few options that say you value personal time and like having even a little bit of life work balance get you saddled with the label of "working to live, not living to work." Anyone who has interviewed before knows this means "They think you're lazy and they're looking for a push over they can overwork." Not a surprise to me when I got a rejection email two days later. My advice to management is simple: restructure your entire recruiting team. Get recruiters who aren't too lazy to do an interview and actually speak to candidates. This method gets you candidates who will lie their way into the company and disappoint you later when they don't want to live in the office. It's weird they'd even care about making their employees work long hours when their recruiting team is clearly lazy.

Everyone was very friendly and seemed passionate about the company. The recruiter did a great job with keeping me updated but 6/7 interviews plus an assessment is simply outrageous for what is considered an entry level role. I completely understand wanting the right fit but I feel like the hiring process should be reevaluated. There’s no reason to take some one on that many interviews to ultimately turn them down.

The interview process began with a phone interview with the recruiter, followed by video interviews with members of the team, and ended with a video interview with the CEO. The interview process gives you a good sense of the people and culture of the company!

First, I had a phone screening with the recruiter. Then, after completing a payroll resolution exercise, I was invited to interview with the Director of People, the person to whom the position reports. The recruiter called me later that day to get my feedback on how the conversation went and confirm my interest. I was next invited to interview with the VP of Color Bar Operations, VP of People, and a tandem interview with the 2 HRBPs. I appreciated that I was given the opportunity to meet each member of the People Operations team. I reached out to the recruiter to get the emails of the people I was going to interview with so that I could send post-interview thank you emails, but he never responded. I followed up with him a week after my interviews to check if there had been any updates to the requisition, and again, I received no response. I found it bizarre that he had been so communicative with me up until that point in the interview process and was now unresponsive. I went on Glassdoor in search of clarification from other interview reviews about hiring timelines and communication only to find reviews dating back to 2018 that speak of the “ghosting” I was now experiencing. Clearly, even with so many negative reviews, the message still has not been received. To be so inconsiderate and unprofessional to ignore a candidate after moving so far in the interview process is unheard of. Frankly, it speaks volumes about you as a company—you don’t care. I never received a rejection email, but it has been 4 weeks since my last interview and I see the position is no longer posted. I can only assume it was filled. My message to you, Madison Reed: if you truly value your team members, your candidates should be treated with the same respect. Do not forget that the employee experience starts with the application process. The one that I had did not reflect kindly on you. My message to you, prospective candidate: don’t waste your time—there are better companies out there that actually walk the talk!
