I had several lengthy phone conversations with Miraks COO who was trying to get a solid leader in place to run the centralized BDC for their 2 stores (Chevrolet/Hyundai)
Being that I was 1,500 miles away, there would obviously be a considerable relocation involved. The COO and I came to terms on comp (160k) and a 20k relocation which was to be paid before I moved.
Just to provide some context on COL in the area, a one bedroom in the area goes for 2500-3k, and no that’s not luxury living, so my initial move and move in costs ($6500 just to sign the lease from afar) were going to be pretty high especially since we planned to have my wife stay out of state for at least a few months until I had a better lay of the land and felt confident moving my kids and wife.)
It’s ironic because there is another interview review here from March of 2021 which speaks almost exactly to my pain points in the process, which still clearly haven’t been worked out.
They ran background, called references and got me an offer letter. That’s when things stopped moving forward.
My start date was July 11, 2022 and between the 2 weeks that they got me an offer letter and my start date no meaningful communication happened. The COO was endlessly on vacation, the HR lady had no not facilitated anything on her end leaving me scrambling after weeks of research for housing to figure out what was actually going on. She was constantly stone walling me, it was clear she was not on it’s with the hire.
Ultimately, it became evident the COO has written a check he couldn’t cash. On the date I was supposed to start working I got a call from the HR lady suggesting I fly out and meet with the team. I told her this was unacceptable and an offer had been reached and that I had adjusted things on my end to begin a new role.
We talked it over as a family and decided that the amount of stress during the onboarding process was far too high and it did not indicate a future with the company would be much brighter. I texted the COO and indicated my intention to no longer pursue the role and sent him an invoice for my lost revue.
In the end it got pretty ugly, they started to accuse me of trying to “con” or “extort” them (not sure if they meant the relocation or the $8k in lost revenue I experienced as a result of the whole ordeal) but after seeing the same scenario on the other review that interviewed for BDC Manger from March of 2021 with Mirak, I am confident I dodged a bullet.
There are major office politics going on between the HR lady and the COO, in the end it was unclear who was actually calling the shots.
