Recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn. Phone call with recruiter followed by a video call with three managers.
Overall easy questions. Two in particular were pointed questions highlighting concerns they had of me.
One was about me “leaving jobs quickly”. People job hop frequently because they are tired of being underpaid and undervalued and switching jobs is the quickest way to increase pay. If you view that as a red flag, you should ask yourself what you’re doing to ensure employees want to stay at your company long term.
The next was about me pursuing an additional masters in data science. It was very clear they viewed me pursuing this degree as a threat. I will never understand this point of view- someone pursuing additional education shows initiative, dedication, and a strong work ethic. These are all qualities that should be valued on any team at any company. The skills I learned in that degree could have been applied to this job. People don’t leave jobs because the title of their job doesn’t match what’s printed on their diploma word for word. And if they’re so concerned about people leaving that they’re searching for any possible reason to accuse an applicant of wanting to leave the position in the future, they have bigger problems.
