      Entretien

My experience with the process was great at the beginning, but unfortunaly it got unfair at the end. First interview was a common HR one to align expectations, second one was a bit more technical and it was great, the interviewer was very professional and actively listening to my answers and pondering over them. Then I’ve got the home assigment that I had the whole week ahead to finish, so I was working over it on my free time and two days before the deadline they send me an email noting that I missed the deadline, which I replied mentioning that I still had two days as per their email. They did not properly acknowledge the mistake but granted me more two days. Since I had mostly finished the project and I was working mostly on documentation, I decided to send the project two days earlier in the afternoon either way so their engineers would have a comfortable time reviewing it, but with over my README and Javadoc around some things I knew that needed better polishing or imprvement that I could not do because of the time (I am still employed in another place after all). The next morning I receive the feedback that looked totally AI, rejecting me on the process with the same observations that I did on my README for improvement and not letting me proceed to the code review interview. It was frustrating because apart from submitting early with the improvement notes, the feedback was rushed by AI (you can tell because of the formatting and the reasoning like mentioning that my test suite was really good and had enough coverage, then the rejecting reason was saying that coverage was not enough). It is a shame because the company and the project looked really appealing to me.

The interview process appeared to place far greater emphasis on behavioral “bar raiser” performance than on evaluating actual technical capability or job-relevant expertise. The behavioral interview format seemed heavily focused on polished answers to hypothetical or retrospective “conflict” and “disagreement” questions. In practice, this type of evaluation often rewards candidates who specifically train for interviews, repeatedly practice answering common interview questions, and prepare structured examples of past experiences in advance of interviews. That creates a bias toward interview performance rather than actual job performance. Many highly capable professionals - especially those who spend years focused on real work instead of repeated interviewing - may not perform well in an interview setting despite being excellent employees in real-world environments. There is a meaningful difference between being skilled at performing in interviews and being skilled at doing the job itself. Behavioral job interviews—especially the familiar “Tell me about a time you had a conflict” or “Describe a disagreement with a coworker” format—are often treated as if they reveal deep truths about a candidate’s future performance. However, research from behavioral economics, industrial-organizational psychology, and decision science suggests that many common interview practices are weak predictors of real-world job success, and are heavily influenced by interviewing skill, communication style, memory reconstruction, and interviewer bias. The issues with subjective hiring judgments and interview bias are discussed in detail in Daniel Kahneman’s book "Noise: A Flaw in Human Judgment." I hope the company reconsiders and ultimately moves away from over-reliance on this type of evaluation approach, as it can unintentionally disadvantage strong candidates who are less focused on interview training but highly capable in actual work environments.
