The interview process (résumé sending, showing portfolio in-person, questions asked, etc.) was pretty typical, so you aren't thrown any curve-balls. HOWEVER The company is clearly structured so that the owners are older men and everyone else is female. As a guy, I didn't get a good feeling about my chances, despite me showing of tons of print- and web-work I had done previously (and they were wanting a hybrid designer, since most applicants were print-only). I was informed a couple days later that I had not been selected, and that I would have been their second choice...and if an opening occurs, they would go with me. I found out a few months later the person they selected was a fresh college grad, female and not bad on the eyes at all. As a typical guy years out of college, I didn't fit the gender requirement apparently imposed by the owners. Obviously I can't prove discrimination, but all indicators pointed to that being at play. What's even worse is that less than a year later they were looking for a designer once again (same listing and everything!), and they didn't reach out to me. When I politely/professionally wrote to them saying they said I was their "#2 choice" before and I was still interested, I was flat out ignored. No response whatsoever. A month later after I wrote to them, they were still posting the opening as available. Turns out that girl they hired quit after a year. That means they either lied to me the first time for no reason whatsoever, or I ACTUALLY WAS their #2 pick, but because they only wanted to hire women, I was an absolute last resort.
