I applied online and received a call within a few days from H/R. Technically, I should have been well qualified for the position (skill-wise). I had a brief phone screen and set up an in-person interview for a couple days later. The HR person greeted me and he was really nice, made me feel comfortable. Then two people were brought into the conference room. One was the hiring manager and the other was his manager. His manager pretty much just sat and looked at me without saying a word (very nerve wracking) while the hiring manager went through my resume and asked a few technical questions about my skills, etc. It seemed as though it was the first time he'd laid eye upon my resume. Neither seemed very interested in the process and I sat there wondering why I'd been invited to come in at all. After about 15 minutes, they both got up and left. I could hear someone outside the room ask "Did you like her?" and they both answered "No." Wow. Then the nice HR person came back and talked to me for a couple minutes, then walked me out. It was really the strangest interview experience I've ever had.
I'd spent the night before doing research on the company, had carefully chosen my outfit for the day and arranged my schedule at my current job. I felt that I'd arrived well prepared. I mean, of course you can't expect much out of an interview and I've been to others where I hadn't been offered the position but at least you kind of walk away with feeling that you had a productive interview. I felt that I didn't have a shot even before I'd arrived, perhaps due to cultural difference. It's a terrible thing for me to say but I left with the feeling that I'd just completely wasted my time and that perhaps I was a token non-Asian interviewee. My advice to other potential candidates would be to go with this in mind. The only plus is that the HR person is great.
