My belief about an organization's culture, is that it starts at the top. Leadership must show the way. You have only one chance to make a good first impression. When you fail at that, maybe, just maybe you will be given a second chance. Always display your best behavior.
I discovered there may be systemic cultural issues at TERi INC. During their interview process, I experienced two (2) very disrespectful encounters with the Director. I was excited at the prospect of coming out of retirement, to share my vocational talents in this challenging field. Sadly, her unprofessional behavior caused me to choose to walk away. I will not ever put myself in the position of working for someone that displays erratic, and/or, potentially abusive characteristics. Her manner was difficult and unkind.
INTERVIEW PROCESS DETAILS:
1. On-line application w/resume
2. HR phone interview
3. HR in-person interview (admin personnel were very pleasant)
4. Director phone interview -
I answered phone using my nick-name. The Director introduced herself by her own nick-name as well. However, her tone was abrupt. She made issue that my name was listed differently on the application. she was looking for the person listed. I happily explained the application indicated my legal name, but most people know me by my shortened nick-name. Apparently it was difficult for her to comprehend that I was indeed the person she was looking for. Very awkward at best, as she continued to make it an issue. My husband overheard the conversation. He was very perplexed by the Director's attitude.
5. Director scheduled an in-person interview, next day.
6. I arrived twenty minutes early. I signed in, then rang the bell. The Director (recognized from website) walked out from an inner room, NO smile, NO greeting, just "May I help you?"
I made it a point to happily introduce myself to her, using my legal name. I stated that my purpose was the interview. She responded flatly with the question, "1:00PM?" I answered "yes" with a smile. She rudely stated "It will be 1:00PM". She did not introduce herself, nor indicate where I should wait. She just turned and walked away. I was stunned by her lack of professionalism.
7. I went back to my car to mull over the weird encounter. A few minutes later, I attempted to speak with the HR Specialist in the admin building, to provide reason for walking away from the interview process. She was not available. I emailed, but, have not had any further contact with TERi INC>
