I recently interviewed for the Recruiter role at TLDR. After an initial video chat with the recruiter, the conversation went longer than scheduled, and I left the call feeling genuinely excited about the opportunity. During the conversation, the recruiter mentioned I would be moving forward to a second interview and should also keep an eye out for an assignment and writing prompt later that week. I followed up after the call to express my enthusiasm and looked forward to next steps. I did not hear anything for a while, and although I never received an invitation for the second interview, I eventually received the assignment. I put a lot of time and thought into the project, which asked for a recruitment strategy, sourcing examples, and more. I was proud of the final product I submitted. A few days later, I received a brief email letting me know they would be moving in a different direction. Unfortunately, the email was incomplete and had typos, which left the communication feeling a little impersonal. I reached out to ask if they could share feedback on where I might have missed the mark, but did not receive a response. As someone who also works in recruiting and believes strongly in delivering a positive candidate experience, I had hoped for a bit more communication throughout the process, especially after the initial excitement. That said, I am still grateful for the opportunity and learn more about the company.

There are 2 morals here: 1 - Trust your instincts when you interview with a company 2 - Be wary of free work early on in an interview process After my short-lived yet laborious interview experience wrapped up with a single sentence that felt like an auto-reject, I decided to go on Glassdoor to see if the poor taste left in my mouth was just me. It wasn't. The team is deeply in need of an interview process reset. They front-load a hefty assignment (aka free work) in the second step of an interview process. Having an assignment as part of an interview process can be understandable, but not if you are just warming up to the company and its mission/values through the interview process, and if the first step of the process essentially doesn't count, as it was littered with the interviewer using a majority of the time to lecture you of his vision (translation: it's a sweat shop). The assignment felt like something they could use themselves without hiring anyone, which makes you wonder if that's why they were interviewing for this role in the first place. The final part of the process as explained was to be a 30/60/90 day onboarding assignment, so not only are you giving away free work from the get-go, you are also apparently in charge of your own onboarding.
