I was lied to, violated and scammed by this company. The leadership team lacks moral compass and accountability. You would be better off working at any other place. I’m an Software Engineer based in the US, I applied for Fullstack Developer position at Taskworld in Tokyo, Japan. Applied through Linkedin, the Hiring manager, (a European national ) contacts me. 1st round (homework test): A problem that tests leadership skills and technical skills. 2nd round (phone): Explains the company and the next rounds of interviews. 3rd round (homework test): Provides the project description of Taskworld app and asked me to comment on them. 4th round (Skype): Skype interview with the VP of the company. The questions were partly technical and partly attitude/behavioral. The hiring manager called me (Early May 2018) and said they were pretty impressed with my performance and wants to offer me the job. They sent me an official offer letter, relocation assistance package, etc. I was explained there is a probation period of 4 months. I agreed and took the offer. Sent over all the paperwork for visa processing to Japan. (So the story should end here, but it didn’t). Two months goes waiting for Japanese visa. Meanwhile - The manager sets up a slack channel for the new recruits, adds me to the company’s github repo. My preparations for relocating to Japan was in full swing - I gave notice to vacate my apartment, almost sold my car, informed family/friends. Around early July, the manager sends me a message that made me sick to my stomach. Due to recent changes in the “company policy”, we want to do few more rounds of technical interview. Asks for my availability. He said it’s an oversight by their team and they were busy earlier in setting up offices, etc. When asked about the offer letter that was extended two months ago, he mentions that these new interviews are just a “formality” and nothing to worry. (Note he sent this message in slack and not through company’s official email. I was appalled by the off-handed, casual manner in which such an important communication was sent. Goes to show how much they care/respect people. Also note how they are willing to put somebody else under the bus for their own mistakes) Since I invested so much time and effort already, I agreed to do another interview. I got a coding assignment - Design a backend for Slack (this guy really likes slack), using typescript. I finished it and sent it back. After few days, sends me a message which pretty much said something like this: There were several issues found in your assignment submission. I can’t make a decision about your skills, we are not sure how good your database skills are, so I am leaning towards “erring on the side of caution” and not hiring you. But there’s a last chance - We will send you another assignment that tests advance Javascript and Typescript. At this time I lost any faith or interest I had in this company and said I want to withdraw my application. A week later, i reached out to them and asked for monetary compensation for the inconvenience caused by their botched up hiring process. He acknowledged that he screwed up big time, agreed to pay me with a condition - sends me a “Termination Letter” to sign (Note that I did not work for the company for even a single day), which said something like “I worked for the company, they didn’t like my performance and hence firing me. I didn’t sign it as there was no truth to it. I discourage anyone from applying to this company.

Our records indicate that you were in fact given an offer, which you accepted in early May 2018. Your employment contract started on July 1, 2018, at which time you were on probation. The code assignment you refer to was issued in early July and is part of our interview process for software engineers. The reason it was issued late was because the hiring team realized that you had only done a technical phone screen up until that point - which you passed with flying colors by the way. Once we received your code assignment, the hiring team found several issues and decided to either confirm or deny their findings. You declined to do a second assignment and instead decided to terminate the employment agreement. Around a week later you emailed us to explain your disappointment with the experience and the trouble it caused you. You asked for some kind of compensation to be paid for it. We were sympathetic to your case and immediately agreed to pay you the full relocation allowance (a relatively large sum reserved for international hires) in cash, in return for you signing an official termination letter. The termination letter contains a mutual non disparagement clause, and is an essential document required by our HR team. No settlement can be legally reached otherwise. This is a standard practice which is not meant to cause the employee any inconvenience. The letter is of course entirely private. For reasons that are not clear to us, you refused to sign the termination letter, leaving us no choice but to terminate the employee contract.
