Applied online, was then contacted by HR who conducted initial screening - including compensation, span of control, title, major responsibilities. Then setup to interview with hiring manager and two peer roles. All interviews went well, good chemistry and mutual qualification of fit. However, HR asked, as did hiring manager, if my existing VP title would make the role unsuitable. I explained that in my career, depending on the company, titles can be very fluid - for example, I've had more responsibility, budget, staff and accountability as a Director at one company versus being a VP at another. I was transparent about my focus more on the job, company, solution, culture and chemistry with leader versus a title. Was as clear as possible this was not a deal breaker for me. Unfortunately, after a burst of interviews within 2 weeks, Veritas went silent for almost a month. I had to reach back to them to get a status, and then was told by HR "the role was too small" for me and they'd hired someone else. My impression is they passed on me not based on skills or capabilities, but because of their own fixed impression of title scope within Veritas. In the end, they weighed the title and scope of the role against their own preferences, versus my experience and preferences, and were non-communicative about their decision.
