To celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re sharing influential Black Americans who have impacted our society through #science and #research. Today, we are highlighting Norbert Rillieux (1806-1894), a Louisiana Creole inventor and an early #ChemicalEngineer. The noted inventor of the multiple-effect evaporator, Mr. Rillieux’s work revolutionized the sugar industry. Rillieux’s mother, Constance Vivant, was a free person of color and the placée of Vincent Rillieux, a white inventor and plantation owner. Mr. Rillieux studied at École Centrale Paris, a prominent #engineering school in France. There, he studied steam engines and steam-based #technology, later teaching at the institution. Mr. Rillieux solved the problem of expensive, dangerous, labor-intensive sugar refinement with his invention. Additionally, this inventor saved lives by proposing a plan to reduce mosquito breeding grounds, as the bugs carried yellow fever. While a political rival blocked this initially, the plan eventually came through. Prior to the start of the American Civil War, Mr. Rillieux returned to France and studied Egyptology and hieroglyphics. A French speaker, Mr. Rillieux was also cousin to renowned painter Edgar Degas.

To celebrate the achievements of Black Americans in #science and #research during #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re sharing about influential Black Americans in these career fields. This week, we’re highlighting the legacy of Dorothy Vaughan (1910-2008), a human computer and mathematician who worked for NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). A familiar face at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Virginia, Ms. Vaughan was the first Black American to be promoted to a supervisor role at West Area Computers. Ms. Vaughan taught herself and her staff the #Fortran programming language before leading the Langley Analysis and Computer Division (ACD) programming section. A posthumous recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal, Ms. Vaughan is one of the #HiddenFigures featured in Margo Lee Shetterly’s book (later adapted into a popular film). Ms. Vaughan received a B.A. in mathematics from Wilberforce University in 1929 and decided to support her family as a teacher during the Great Depression instead of pursuing graduate studies.
