We’re thrilled to announce a partnership with Redwood Materials to deploy a pioneering battery energy storage system at our Normal, Illinois manufacturing plant. Using more than 100 Rivian battery packs from decommissioned vehicles, we are creating 10 megawatt-hours (MWh) of dispatchable energy to support our on-site operations. This partnership gives a valuable energy resource a new life. While EV batteries are designed to last hundreds of thousands of miles, they can remain incredibly useful as stationary storage long after a vehicle is retired. By integrating these "second-life" packs into our manufacturing ecosystem, we can reduce grid load during peak demand, lower costs, and support a more resilient and secure power system without the need for new infrastructure. It’s a blueprint for rapidly scaling second-life batteries nationwide and building the grid of the future. “EVs represent a massive, distributed and highly competitive energy resource,” said Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe. “As energy needs grow, our grid needs to be flexible, secure, and affordable.
