When turning in my application (P.S. Try to turn it into a manager; the ones in blue button-up shirts), I immediately asked if and when I could schedule an interview -- That really catches their attention. The interview itself was a 1:1 with the District Manager, asking a series of questions; nothing terribly out of the ordinary. After taking a quick tour of the store, the DM went to talk to the Manager, and within a few minutes, they informed me I got the job!
A few months later, we were hiring, and I had happened to be in the back-room when the DM was going through applications. She, without even reading them, ditched about half of them because of the quality of the application: as in, if it had stains, terribad handwriting, folded more than once, etc... After than, THEN she went through them.
When going through evaluations with my manager about 6 months later, he informed me that as soon as I turned in my app and asked him about interviews, he went and called up the DM demanding an interview for "this kid". He was so impressed with my assertiveness; I would highly recommend that kind of behavior when going out for a job!
