They were very polite throughout, asking if times and dates were convenient for me. I was very interested in the role and the company until I went to the final panel interview which would have given me pause had I been offered the position. Many of the panelists were professional and kind and gave a positive impression of the company. One panelist, however, gave me a different impression. She made an insulting and disparaging remark about my previous employer to whom I had happily devoted nearly 8 years of my life. She also seemed to have a very paternalistic attitude about education. She mentioned that I would frequently have to "step over passed out parents to enter school buildings" and that parents were frequently unable to attend parent nights because they were "strung out." I am a person who believes addiction is a disease and that we shouldn't blame the victim and also a person who believes that we must place much of the blame for failures in our educational system on the system of economic inequality that perpetuates generational poverty versus blaming low-income people. This made it seem that possibly the role would not be a good fit with my values. Overall, though, that was just one person on the panel, and maybe she was just having a bad day. The lengthy process taught me about what I am looking for in a new role and in an employer, so it was a very positive experience overall.
