In celebration of Earth Day, we’re highlighting one of many ways in which PayPal employees are supporting environmental impact in communities around the world, on Earth Day and every day! As a member of the Community Impact Team in Mexico City, Mexico, Héctor Garrido, a Data Scientist at PayPal, recently spent an entire weekend mentoring small business founders during a climate tech hackathon hosted by CIFAR Alliance (Climate Innovation for Adaptation and Resilience). Hector led his team of young environmental innovators to create the concept for a crowdfunding product named DONNA, a fintech-enabled platform designed to empower ecological entrepreneurs to raise funds by leveraging the power of social media and connecting with potential partners. Named in honor of the first woman to charter and run a U.S. bank, the award recognizes four women who have charted new paths in their industries, demonstrated a commitment to economically empowering those in their communities, and are ultimately creating a more inclusive world. Through our Worker Financial Wellness Initiative, PayPal has been able to take critical steps in bolstering the financial health of our employees. PayPal was ranked # 5 in the “Financial Services” industry on Newsweek’s America’s Most Trustworthy Companies 2023 list, which aims to measure trust in businesses. To develop the list, Newsweek and Statista reviewed all stock listed companies headquartered in the U.S. with a revenue more than $500 million and surveyed 25,000 U.S. residents on customer trust, investor trust and employee trust. The final list includes the top 700 companies survey respondents trust the most, ranked by industry. This is the second consecutive year PayPal has been recognized, previously ranking # 17 in 2022.
In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth and #IWD2023, we’re reflecting on the work our community is doing to improve the financial health of women, particularly our more than $100M commitment to advancing gender equity. As part of this commitment, PayPal employees from across 22 countries pledged to provide more than 10,000 hours of capacity-building and skill-based volunteer services to charities advancing gender equality by 2026. Maggie Lena Walker’s life was one spent breaking down barriers. A Black woman born in 1864, she began her career as a teacher and went on to open a department store, finance, and run a newspaper, and in 1903, she became the first Black woman – and the first woman – to charter and lead a U.S. bank. Walker was a businesswoman and civil rights activist that dedicated her life to improving the lives of those in her community, leaving behind a remarkable legacy. To celebrate Walker’s contributions and those of women who are carrying on her legacy today by creating opportunities for economic advancement in underserved communities, PayPal established the Maggie Lena Walker Award. The award includes one category for Achievement and another for Emerging Leaders. Today, PayPal is excited to announce the second class of awardees whose work reflects the late banking executive and civil rights activist's mission and legacy. PayPal ranked #123 on Forbes’ second annual World’s Top Female-Friendly Companies list, which recognizes the companies leading the way in supporting women inside and outside of the workforce. To determine the list, Forbes and Statista asked employees to evaluate their company on supportive policies for women in the workplace, balanced recruitment, and related topics. This is PayPal’s second year on the list, moving up 84 spots from #207 in 2021.
