Ahead of our company-wide Juneteenth conversation on environmental justice, the energy was already building across our offices. It started with members of our Black Leaders and Collaborative Changemakers (BLACC) Employee Resource Group sporting custom Juneteenth tees designed by Atlanta-based architect Jessica Gardenhire. At our world headquarters, the aroma from O’Henry’s Kitchen on Wheels greeted employees bright and early (and was worth the wait) while the Usual Suspects jazzed up the Alcove with live music. Championing champions. Today, fewer than 10% of public statues nationwide honor women. Our contribution to the City of Columbia’s statue honoring Coach Dawn Staley, head coach of the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team, is one step toward changing that. Cementing this local and national hero was about more than the game—it was a symbol for young girls, a celebration of equality, and a message of change for women everywhere. We wrapped up a legendary, year-long mentorship with Hawkins STEMM Academy with a final Victory Royale at SSOE's HQ. Kindergarteners tested aerodynamics in a paper airplane challenge, third graders built structurally sound marshmallow towers, and fifth graders explored real-world STEM concepts behind games like Fortnite and The Sims—and everyone enjoyed the pizza party! Throughout the year, SSOE team members championed hands-on learning at the school, inspiring students to envision themselves in STEM careers. And maybe one day, see themselves at SSOE. #chooseSSOE

In May, ¡HoLA!—our Hispanic and Latin Allies Employee Resource Group—partnered with our Employee Clubs across five SSOE offices to host a vibrant week of events celebrating Hispanic and Latin heritage.
